End Violence against Women sign now

H.E. Ms Sumedha Jayasena
Minister of Child Development and Womens Affairs
Sri Lanka

20 October 2007

Your Excellency,

As you are well aware, the Sri Lanka Prevention of Domestic Violence Act came into force in October 2005 to arrest the growing trend of domestic violence in the country. However, a survey conducted by your Ministry in June 2006 found that 60\% of women throughout Sri Lanka are victimised by domestic violence while 44\% of pregnant women are also subjected to harassment.

In addition there are daily incidents of harassment of women on the road, buses and public places.

We firmly believe that any form of violence against women is not acceptable. It is necessary to take definite measures for the elimination of all forms of violence and harassment, if women are to live as empowered individuals in society, equal in every sense to their male counterparts in order to secure social and economic development in Sri Lanka.
