"Daylight Saving's"

This Petition is to finish the work started by “NDP MLA Thomas Dang”

Do you feel tired? Fatigued? Frustrated at changing the time or how your body feels the days after the switch? Are you finding it hard to find truth in what time change is about? Well.. this is the petition for you!

Together "Lets END Daylight Saving's"

Before you read ahead “let me not waste your time” You will find the answers to your questions about “why we have Daylight Saving’s, and what the impacts to your body are, as well as what benefits you get from it.” But you must ask 4 questions to yourself first.

1) Why do we use Daylight Savings?
2) Why are there 24 hours in a day?
3) What impacts does Daylight Savings have on my body?
4) How do we fix this as to not disrupt our life?

Many people have asked "what is it for? Do we save energy? is it safer? am I Saving Time? Don't Farmers need the light? Isn’t it safer to drive in the light of day?" well, here is the research and how we can fix something that is in "Bureaucratic Deadlock" one of the most frustrating and antiquated traditions we perform around the world in over 70 countries. Just remember that "together" we can make our world better - "the moment you think you can no longer learn or improve is the moment you have ceased learning and can no longer improve".

So.. Why don’t we just remove this antiquated tradition? The reason we have a deadlock might shock you ever so slightly…. "Sports".

Sports is the main reason why we have "not" removed the time change. "Feel Frustrated?" Do you find that Sports should dictate your sleep patterns?" If you’re like me, you enjoy and respect sports, however letting Sports Teams and franchises dictate when I am allowed to wake up "because lets face it, you do NOT save time, gain an hour, or become more safe due to daylight savings" is not right. One of my favorite slogans I've ever had the pleasure to hear was "Only the fool thinks that cutting off the bottom of their blanket then sewing it onto the top makes the blanket longer" I know that quote is not the full original quote, but it is true none the less. If you need proof that "Sports" has created this entire "Daylight Saving's" blunder that takes your sleep patterns away, review the link I have posted. For this one NHL Hockey was the main factor that forced the stop of change in Alberta Canada, The Calgary Flames & Edmonton Oilers NHL Hockey teams put in their say "and Money" and stopped a bill from being passed that would have eliminated the time change.

Their reason: “We’d lose viewers“, was their response. Quoted from The Calgary Flames Franchise representatives.

What is time? How does it work?

Now there are some other things you should know, as our planet is "a globe" and spins on a 24 hour time rotation "more or less" we need technically 24 different time zones in reality, but it is not that simple as Today, the Earth's axis is tilted 23.5 degrees from the plane of its orbit around the sun. But this tilt changes. During a cycle that averages about 40,000 years, the tilt of the axis varies between 22.1 and 24.5 degrees. Because this tilt changes, the seasons as we know them can become exaggerated.

Also the 24 hour day is based on the “Stellar Day” A day, understood as the span of time it takes for the Earth to make one entire rotation with respect to the celestial background or a distant star (assumed to be fixed), is called a stellar day. This period of rotation is about 4 minutes less than 24 hours (23 hours 56 minutes and 4.1 seconds) and there are about 366.242 2 stellar days in one mean tropical year (one stellar day more than the number of solar days). Other planets and moons have stellar and solar days of different lengths from Earth's because of their own distance and rotational speed.

Now that you have the “basic science” behind how your planet works “Relative to Time“, let me ask you a simple question….

“If I have 24 hours in a day, how am I able to “add an hour / subtract an hour?”

The answer :

“You can’t”

The old slogans “Spring forward and fall back” are more accurate than “Gain an hour / Lose an Hour” either way you are challenging how your body operates on time. If you were to suddenly switch from waking up at your normal time “lets say 06:00 am” and then force your body to wake up at “05:00 am” would you feel more or less rested? Would you be safer behind the wheel with less sleep? Do you think that having the light of day would make your sleep deprived driving safer for you and those around you?

The answer:

No

Your body is a wonderful organism that has many parts, with those parts comes a “sleep/wake cycle” also known as your “Circadian Rhythm”. Now as I have studied and practiced medicine in Alberta Canada as an Emergency Medical Technician under the governing body of the Alberta College of Paramedic’s, let me explain that “Humans are Humans”, I do understand that interruptions in your sleep / wake cycle can have long lasting chronic effects to your health. Some people feel this interruption more than others and some are able to cope better. This however “does not” change the fact that an interruption in your sleep / wake cycle pattern can leave you “Groggy, foggy, loss of coordination, irritable, frustrated and feeling like you just cant do what you used to in “what you believed” is the normal span of time in a day.

What is my Circadian Rhythm?
A part of your hypothalamus “a portion of your brain” controls your circadian rhythm. That said, outside factors like light & darkness can also impact it. When it’s dark at night, your eyes send a signal to the hypothalamus that it’s time to feel tired. Your brain in turn sends a signal to your body to release melatonin which makes your body tired. That’s why your circadian rhythm tends to coincide with the cycle of daytime and night time “and why its so hard for shift workers to sleep during the day and stay awake at night.

Your circadian rhythm works best when you have “regular sleep habits”, like going to bed at night and waking up in the morning around the same times from day to day “including weekends”. When things get in the way, like jet lag, “daylight savings time”, or a compelling “sports event on TV that keeps you up into the wee hours of the morning, you can disrupt your circadian rhythm, which makes you “feel out of sorts and can make it harder to pay attention.”

So what is the proposed fix? You now know in only a few short paragraphs “What our day is and why we have 24 hours in the day”, you also know about how your body has a sleep / wake cycle known as a “circadian rhythm” and that disruptions play huge factors on fatigue and attention span. So… we are down to 2 questions out of the original 4, why do we observe daylight savings and how can we fix it.

Why do we use Daylight Savings?
Daylight Savings has a “long” history that can be dated and attributed to the United States of America around World War 1, Primarily it was designed to save fuel by reducing the need to use artificial lighting. “So they say”. This was not observed in all the states until World War 2. Later on The “Uniform Time Act of 1966” provided the basic framework for alternating between daylight saving time and standard time “The True 24 hour world rotational time”, this act is still the basic foundation of why we “even in Canada” use Daylight Savings. There are however some other factors like, Benjamin Franklin, he himself around 1784 wrote an essay called “Turkey Vs Eagle, McCauley is my Beagle” It was first seriously advocated by William Willet, a British Builder who cited this in his pamphlet published in 1907 “Waste of Daylight”. There is also the theory that at the time in the early 1900’s the baseball franchises banded together so that they could create a “World Sensational Event” called ….. “A Double Header”, which allowed 2 different baseball teams to play back to back games that could be aired for viewers / listeners to expand their franchise influence and sales regardless of time differences.

What? Did sports step in again? You got it, it was originally designed to save on fuel during a war effort “that part is true” but the reason it stayed was the national sensation of sports Franchises setting up sensational events to capture listeners / viewers. Sports teams again stepped in to create more revenue, any business owner will tell you that “More Revenue is always better”, and to some, personal wealth is more valuable than personal health.

So, how do we end Daylight Savings?
Best way to start is to understand why its 5am in one place and 5pm in another. Our time is dictated by a few factors you may have heard of Greenwich Mean Time GMT or Coordinated Universal Time UTC, to visualize what this looks like. Picture an orange once its been peeled, each slice of orange represents a specific time zone that is dictated by its rotational position of the Earth as it spins around the cosmos. As the earth is a sphere the orange slice of “Alberta Canada is -7 hours from zero, zero being the slice of the world that has the United Kingdom in it “Hence Greenwich Mean Time GMT as Zero”. So if its 5am in Alberta, using the globe as a map it would be 5pm in Mongolia the exact opposite side of the world.

Can you change the time?
Yes you can “on your clock“, but it will not change the fact that the earth spins as it always has and will continue to do so with the same result each day of your existence whether you follow the logical “Standard Time / Universal Time” or decide that you need to watch 2 sports games back to back and ignore the way your planet is set up and alter what your clock says will not matter. You are “not” saving time by setting your clock back nor are you “gaining an hour” you are simply shifting when you wish to go to bed and when you want to get up.

I propose that with this petition we keep our time zones fixed with the UTC time “For Alberta it would MST or -7, that we do “not” follow the tradition of “Daylight Savings” and stay on one permanent time zone “your own“.

What are the Health effects of Daylight Savings?
Last thing I will say is this, according to a study put on by the American Academy of Neurology, Daylight Savings has the following effects.

Researchers Found: During the First 2 Days of Daylight Savings
- Ischemic Stroke Risk increased by : +8.0%
- Cancer Patients were +25.00% more likely to have a stroke
- Those 65 and older were +20.00% more likely to have a stroke

Researchers Found: The University of Alabama at Birmingham
- Heart Attacks raise by +10.00%
- Sleep time is reduced by up to -40 minutes for the average person leading to fatigue, irritability, lack of attention and or coordination.

Researchers Found: The New England Journal of Medicine
- Increase in Traffic Accidence up to +30.00%

Researchers Found: The New England Journal of Medicine
- Increase in Myocardial Infarct “Heart Attack” by up to +20.00%

Researchers Found: Journal of Applied Psychology
- Increase in Workplace Related Injuries Increase by up to +20.00%

Researchers Found: Chronobiology International
- Spontaneous Pregnancy Loss increased by up to +41.00%

Researchers Found: Time & Date.com
- Lack of sleep
- Depression Triggers
- Transitional Feelings

With all of these respected institutions saying the same thing “Daylight Savings” is BAD for you and should be removed……. Isn’t it about time we do so? Sports teams will go on without this.
