eBay : Protecting Buyers from Feedback Extortion sign now

There is a growing trend on eBay where sellers refuse to submit feedback for buyers until the buyers first submit feedback for the sellers.

Of my past five eBay transactions (spanning two to three months) -- in which I have paid in full immediately after the auction ends by using PayPal -- three have been poor transactions, due to poor seller policy. But, in each case, the seller refused to leave me positive feedback -- even though my payment was immediate through PayPal -- until I left them feedback. The implication is that the seller wants to ensure that he/she receives "positive" feedback, even in situations where it may not be deserved. This puts unfair pressure on the buyer to leave positive feedback for bad sellers, which doesn't protect future buyers from getting scammed, as the feedback system is meant to do.

This practice undermines completely the reason the feedback system exists in the first place.

eBay has policies with regard to "Feedback Extortion," which this clearly is, by definition, but eBay explicitly states on its website that the particular type of extortion that I have described here doesn't qualify as such.

Furthermore, eBay states that they will not remove retaliatory feedback left by sellers for buyers who gave an honest feedback rating on a bad transaction, even though the buyer fulfilled his/her end of the bargain the moment that funds were transferred to the seller.

However, there is a simple solution to this problem:

If a buyer purchases an item and funds are transferred to the seller in a timely fashion using a payment service that is trackable by eBay -- such as PayPal -- then eBay should automatically generate a positive feedback for the buyer, as his/her obligation at that moment has been completely fulfilled. An auto-generated positive feedback should be clearly marked as such:

"This positive feedback was auto-generated by eBay because this buyer payed promptly using PayPal."

If this simple functionality were to be added, then it would be impossible for a seller to extort undeserved/fraudulent positive feedback from a buyer who completely fulfilled his/her end of the transaction.

This won't solve the other types of Feedback Extortion, but it will certainly solve this one particular type, which appears to be not only popular, but increasingly so.

Please help mend the feedback system to protect your customers.

Thank you for your time.
