Drug Screening Welfare Recipients In Maryland sign now

Preamble:

Recently, Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed a law requiring adults applying for welfare assistance to undergo drug screening (CNN, 2011).

Maryland has various welfare programs, such as cash assistance, food stamps and income-based housing, etc., which are directly funded through federal and state tax dollars.

It is no secret that the citizens of Maryland have suffered throughout the nations economic crisis. The continuing economic crisis has affected many of Marylands taxpaying citizens. The taxpaying citizens of Maryland have suffered from loss; loss of employment, loss of housing, loss of transportation, loss of health care, loss of financial stability, etc. Marylanders have had to change their lifestyles and have had to make sacrifices just to make ends meet.

According to Pollack and Reuter (2006), illicit drug use was more than twice as common among [welfare] recipients as among mothers who did not receive cash aid.

However, the state of Maryland does not drug screen its welfare recipients. Why should the hard working, taxpaying citizens of Maryland, continue to support welfare recipient substance abusers?

Petition:

We, the undersigned, call on Governor Martin OMalley, the elected officials of Marylands twenty-three counties, the elected officials in congressional districts one through eight, the elected officials in legislative districts one through forty-seven and the elected and the elected officials of Baltimore City, to reform the requirements, to include required and random drug screening, for adults who receive public welfare in the form of Temporary Assistance to Need Families (TANF), Temporary Cash Assistance (TCA), Food Supplement (FS), Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and Medical Assistance (MA). Adult welfare recipients who are drug users should immediately have their welfare assistance revoked.
