Donahoe: Draft Nugent sign now

It has come to the attention of many Buffalo Bills fans that one position (clearly one of the most important) on the team needs to be upgraded. The position, in this case, is the kicker. The team's current kicker, Rian Lindell, has one of the best percentages in team history and held one of the best in the league during the 2004-05 season. What's the problem, then? Well, while looking at his stats, one notices that he did not attempt any kicks from 50+ yards out. The Bills' clearly had opportunities to kick at such length, but decided to punt away. Why does he have such a good percentage? Simply because he rarely kicked anything over 39+ yards. His numbers from 40-49 are 4/10 in his Buffalo career, and he has only attempted two kicks from 50+ plus in 2 seasons with Buffalo, missing both.

Stats aside, why else is there a problem here? There were games within the past two years where the final result, in hindsight, depended on Lindell's leg. Lindell missed crucial Field goals in 2003, which ALTERED the final season record. Against the Texans, a game where the Bills lost 12-10, he missed two field goals, a chip shot 29 yarder and a 44 yarder, there was no wind, so weather wasn't a factor. If he would have made one, the Bills would have been 7-9, not 6-10. When drafting or attracting free agents, a teams' record is quite important. In 2004, Rian Lindell missed a 42 field goal against the Jaguars (in perfect weather), a game where the Bills lost on a last second play. If he made that kick, the game would not have been an automatic "L" for the Bills, rather they would have gone into Overtime. In a year where the team was one game away from the playoffs, that miss meant a lot. The season finale against the Pittsburgh Steeler backups may have been more of a heartbreaker. The Bills decided to kick a FG on 4th and 1 from 28 yards out. He missed, sucking the air out of the stadium and killing any momentum built from a great drive. If he made it, the score would have been 20-16 - likely giving the team more confidence to wrap the game up.

Rian Lindell cannot be depended on when the moment counts, and as the Patriots' proved, it's good to have a kicker who can make the clutch kick - especially with a night and day Bills' offense.

The below signees are suggesting to the Buffalo Bills' organization that Ohio State kicker Mike Nugent be drafted with the club's 2nd round pick - or that a Free Agent kicker be brought in. Buffalo Bills' all-time leading scorer Steve Christie will likely be available.
