Don't Fund Study to Lower Retirement Benefits sign now

We the undersigned ask you to remove the $250,000 appropriation to study a new benefit plan for the Seattle City Employees Retirement System.

Seattle City Council is considering adding a $250,000 expenditure to the 2011-12 budget for the Seattle City Employees Retirement System to fund a study that will "evaluate the future costs of the employee retirement benefit and to design alternative plans for new hires that may be more affordable to employees and the taxpayers."

The Seattle City Employees Retirement System is a good one and one that others should be modeled after. As a defined benefit system, it is an important benefit earned by city employees. Trying to lower costs can only lower the benefit and will harm the future for new employees. Diminishing the retirement benefit will make it harder to attract qualified applicants to fill highly technical and skilled jobs.

We also find it inappropriate to spend $250,000 to come up with a way to reduce employee benefits when so many excellent and long-term employees are being cut to balance the budget.

Please remove this item from the budget. It is Green Sheet number 108-3-A-1.

The people of Seattle do not want their essential services downgraded with a two tier system that pits new employees with older ones. By lowering the compensation for new hires, the ability of the City to attract quality people will be diminished. It is u
