DISNEY V TO END SWEATSHOPS IN CHINA NOW! sign now

Students and Scholars against Corporate Misbehavior (SACOM) is a new Hong Kong-based nonprofit organization founded in June 2005, led by students, scholars, and labor activists. We have currently around 100 academic advisors serving on board. Our aim is to monitor corporate behavior and to advocate for workers rights in China.

Before the opening of Hong Kong Disneyland, the 5th theme park of Disney, on 12 September 2005, SACOM with a group of university student activists who identified themselves as Disney HunterЁ launched the Looking for Mickey Mouses ConscienceЁ Campaign.

Disneys products such as childrens books and toys are made with the blood, sweat, and tears of young Chinese workers. Disney has a wide audience and should show its leadership in promoting global sustainability. But tragically it has failed to do so,Ё commented by SACOM (for the full research reports in English and Chinese published in 2005, 2006 and 2007, visit www.sacom.hk).

Disney should do the right thing:

(1) to ensure it supplier factories comply with Chinese labor laws;
(2) to give every Chinese worker at every Disney supplier a written labor contract and a copy of Disneys Code of Conduct in Chinese;
(3) to collaborate with independent NGOs to provide workers at all Disney suppliers with labor rights training;
(4) to respect workers rights to bargain collectively by facilitating the formation of mechanisms of worker representation at all Disney suppliers.
