DEFEND KENYAN JOURNALISTS! sign now

We, the signers of this petition are disturbed and outraged at the continuing and escalating harassment of Kenyan journalists by Kenyan politicians, police officers, security personnel and other organs of the ruling National Rainbow Coalition.

We condemn in the strongest terms possible the intimidation and threats directed at journalists employed by the Nation Group by leaders and activists of the Orange/NO referendum team.

We find it appalling that the same politicians who benefited from the publicity accorded to them by these same journalists only two and a half years ago when some of them were campaigning for political office would today frog-march members of the same fourth estate before a hostile crowd putting their lives at severe risk of public lynching.

We also condemn the the spine-chilling thuggery displayed by a gang of ten police officers who swooped on the offices of the Kenya Times newspapers to nab columnist David Ochami who they later subjected to hours of bullying, hectoring and humiliating interrogation in a manner eerily reminiscent of the dark days of the KANU one party dictatorship.

We call on the Kenyan government, and President Mwai Kibaki in particular to protect Kenyan journalists from members of his government, and we must add, his own first wife Lucy Kibaki.

Members of the National Rainbow Coalition owe their present positions of power in large measure to the fearless work of Kenya's reporters, editors, photographers, news anchors, radio announcers, cartoonists, columnists, feature writers and investigative staff who helped to dismantle the edifice of fear and silence erected by the KANU dictatorship.

We urge all Kenyan politicians to be humble and remember the Kiswahili proverb:

Mpanda Ngazi Hushuka.
