Debarking dogs sign now

Dear whomever it may concern,

How would you feel if one of your relatives decided you talked too much and took away your voice?
This is what some people are doing to Dogs, and it is not illegal in New Zealand.

Debarking is a cruel way of removing a Dogs bark. It is done by either cutting the Dogs vocal cords, or removing tissue from the dogs throat. This is a painful way of removing the bark of a dog and in my opinion, should not be allowed in New Zealand or anywhere else in the world. When dogs are debarked they are left with a cruel sounding wheeze or no sound at all instead of a bark.

Another form of stopping dogs barking, and in my opinion, another cruel way, is using collars that punish the dog in certain ways when they try to bark. The most popular collars are Shock collars, these collars sense when a dog is going to bark and give the dog a shock, (similar to an electric shock,) so it will soon learn that every time it goes to bark it will get hurt.
There are other collars that spray a horrible smelling liquid into the dogs nose and mouth, giving them a fright when they hear it, and again forcing them to suffer from the smell and taste every time they go to bark.

These horrible ways of debarking are considered when a Dog barks constantly, annoying owners and neighbours. I highly recommend Basenjis, the African Barkless Dogs, for people such as these that have not yet realised that with a dog comes a bark.

Some places, such as parts of Australia, have bans against debarking, and in my opinion, New Zealand should bring one in as well because debarking is cruel, harmful and unnecessary.

Barking is a Dogs form of speech and unlike humans, they cannot write down the things that they want to say. If we took away the Dogs bark, we would be taking away their voice. I strongly believe that:
If you can't deal with its natural behaviour, you shouldn't have the animal at all!
Dogs bark for a number of reasons including:
To show excitement. (e.g. when playing fetch with their owner)
To show pain
To show loneliness (e.g. when left alone all day)
To warn owners of danger (e.g. When hearing unfamiliar sounds)

There are lots of other ways that owners can use to stop their dogs from barking. The easiest and most harmless one would simply be training the dog not to bark. Dogs can quickly learn to stop barking when told if taught.

Debarking is just a lazy, and unnecessary way of fixing the problem, and is cruel to all Dogs. I hope that this will not be considered as an option for barking dog owners in the near future.

Thanks,
