David Phillips for Head ETHS Track Coach sign now

We, the undersigned, would like to express our support for coach David Phillips as a candidate for the position of head coach of track and field at Evanston Township High School.

In Phillips' own competitive career as an athlete, he was the captain of a state champion track team at Evanston, and went on to run at the NCAA Division-I level -- again serving as captain -- at both Northwestern University and Michigan State University.

For over a decade, he has been dedicated to improving the quality of Evanston running, often working nights, weekends, and throughout the summer. Any day or time an athlete is willing to show up, so is David Phillips.

His dedication has reaped particularly staggering rewards in the distance and middle distance events, traditionally the gaping holes in Evanston's otherwise strong track program. Prior to 1998, for example, no Evanston 4x800 meter relay team had scored at the State Championship for over ten years. Beginning in 1998, Phillips orchestrated a run of 7 consecutive years where the Evanston 4x800 made the state finals, tying a state record held by York Township, perhaps the high school with the most well known running program in the country. In 1999, Phillips led that 4x800 team to its first state championship, with one of the fastest times in the nation, according to noted Track and Field News, and in 2000 he led a 4x1-mile team to an All-American finish at a national meet in North Carolina.

These accomplishments are made all the more impressive considering that Phillips routinely has one of the smaller groups of kids in the state to work with. He often carves the 4x800 team from a total of five or six candidates, and regularly defers to the other coaches who reserve some of Evanston's deep talent pool for sprinting and field events.

Off the field, it is extremely common for Evanston track alums to remain in touch with Phillips, and even to show up at practice, where he is glad to have them speak about their experiences in college -- many of Phillips' athletes continued to run in college, several at major public institutions in Illinois and elsewhere, and several others at Ivy League and other world-renowned institutions.

We saw David Phillips turn a lack luster distance and middle distance program into a perennial powerhouse with athletes who came to embody the dedication and character that all Wildkits should aspire to.

Phillips is an Evanstonian through and through. He is a community fixture both as the owner of Capitol Driving School on Asbury Ave., and as the head ETHS cross country coach. On the track, David Phillips has the Midas Touch, so it would be in the interest of all supporters of Evanston track and field to allow him to touch as many athletes as possible. We hope that Phillips will be seriously considered as the next head coach of track and field at Evanston.
