In re: The Network
We write to share with you our views about Bishop Stantons Network:
1. IT DEFINES AS FALSE-BELIEVERS THOSE WHO DO NOT JOIN. We find very troubling the Networks Organizational Charter, Article II, which defines their views as the true and legitimate expression of faith. By their definition our faith is false because we dont agree with them on a narrow issue (human sexual orientation).
2. IT IS DIVISIVE. It forces Episcopalians to take sides when it is not necessary. To form a competing church is contrary to centuries of Episcopal amity and unity.
3. IT IS HASTY. Equally or more serious matters of disagreement among us (the Book of Common Prayer, divorce and women in the clergy) required decades of careful thought and cautious action.
4. IT IS INTOLERANT. Episcopalians continue to set aside their differences in the above matters and go to the Communion rail together. Shouldnt we be equally respectful on one anothers views in the matter of human sexual orientation?
5. IT IS INTRUSIVE. It seems to us that sexual conduct among informed, consenting adults is among the most private matters in every society and ought not be matter open to public judgment.
6. IT IS PERCHED PRECARIOUSLY ON A SINGLE ISSUEhuman sexual orientation.
7. IT IS NOT BASED ON SOUND REASON. The near-unanimous judgment of the worldwide scientific community holds that human sexual orientation is influenced to such a degree by genetics that it is a matter of status, not a matter of choice, and therefore not subject to moral judgment.
