Crisis Facing St Stephen's College sign now

An Appeal by Alumni and Faculty (former and present)

When, after a due selection process, a regular principal was appointed in September 2008, there was hope that St. Stephens College would regain its robustness, be able to live up to its reputation for excellence and meet new academic challenges through the collective energies of all its members. Unfortunately, this hope proved to be short-lived and the college now appears to be in a critical situation. We understand that this has been largely due to the reckless, gratuitous and unprecedented interference in the administrative and financial matters of St Stephens College by Bishop Sunil Kumar Singh, the Chairman of the Supreme Council and Governing Body. Some notable instances of this which have had grave consequences for the financial, administrative and academic autonomy of the institution include*:

1. Pitting the college against the University by committing acts that violate the University Ordinances (such as putting the Principal on probation and appointing an interim Bursar not recommended by the Principal). It is noteworthy that the Principal was put on probation retrospectively more than two months after appointing him on a regular basis without any mention of probation in the initial appointment letter.

2. Violating the spirit of the College Constitution (taking the office of the Treasurer away from the Principal).

3. Violating principles of natural justice (instituting enquiries without spelling out their bases, terms of reference or procedural guidelines, attempting to intimidate a majority of faculty members who have been protesting these goings-on).

4. Undermining the administrative and academic autonomy of the college (undue interference in day-to-day management including admissions; issuing a show cause notice to the Principal for inquiring after why a physically challenged student was refused facilities authorized by the University by the Superintendent of Exams, Dr. M.S. Frank).

5. Undermining the ethical culture of the institution (doctoring minutes, organizing witch hunts).

Such encroachments into the financial and administrative autonomy of the College, the various perversions of justice, of procedures and of regulations, intimidatory tactics and witch hunts will cause long term damage to the institution, its ethos and its standards of excellence and must be resisted by those who value this institution and its future.

As part of our expression of concern at these developments, we appeal to the Bishop Sunil Kumar Singh to allow the College to function normally without interference.
