Cover Our Pill sign now

We are concerned that our student insurance plan at Columbia College Chicago does not provide any birth control coverage. Contraception is a basic healthcare need for women. Access to contraception is critical in achieving healthy families and a healthy lifestyle, both in medical and economic terms. Responsible, preventive contraception deserves to be at the core of every insurance plan. This is especially true for young college women, many of whom are not in a position to have children at this time in their lives.

Women that depend on the student health plan for their medical needs are forced to pay $300-$500 a year out of their pocket for contraception. These are expenses that men with the same health care plan do not have to worry about. I believe that Title IX, the federal civil rights law, requires the College to treat my health needs on the same basis as male needs. Furthermore, Chicago has recently agreed to the UNs CEDAW (Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women). In Article 12 of CEDAW it states:
States Parties shall take all appropriate measures to
eliminate discrimination against women in the field
of health care in order to ensure, on a basis of equality
of men and women, access to health care services,
including those related to family planning.

As a matter of fairness and good health policy, We ask that the Columbia College Chicago student insurance plan cover all methods of prescription contraception.
