Congressional Debt Clock sign now

To: the Congress of the United States of America

Subject: Installation of a National Debt Clock on the floor of the House and Senate.

Whereas:
As of September 2005, the US national debt stood at just under 8 Trillion dollars (that is equivalent to more than $27,000 for every man woman and child in America.)

Whereas:
Congress has historically ignored every legislative mechanism intended to keep deficit spending in check.

Whereas:
Irresponsible spending is engaged in by both major political parties and the debt limit is routinely increased.

Whereas:
There is no apparent sense of urgency in regard to debt reduction.

We the undersigned American people, grasping the consequences of carrying and increasing such massive debt, respectfully urge congress to install a real time National Debt Clock in the House and Senate. This Clock will be large and readily visible from the floor of the house and the senate.

In addition to the visual representation of the debt, the clock will include an audible alarm which will sound each time an additional $1 Billion dollars is added to the Debt. Based on recent spending habits this would be a couple of times each day. We further urge that the clock and the alarm shall remain on at all times.

Since the current budget is already in the red we suggest funding for the congressional debt clock be entirely from voluntary contributions. Congressman and Senators will be welcome to contribute to clock funding as individuals, but no federal debt should be accumulated in order to fund the debt clock.
