Community Needs Dix Fully Open!
Help stop the state from forcing the mentally ill and workers into the streets!

To Governor Bev Perdue and DHHS Secretary Lanier Cansler,

We, the undersigned Dorothea Dix hospital patients, workers, community members, church members and family members, demand that Dix remain open with a full capacity of at least 120 beds because:

The central region of the state does not have sufficient community-based services,
We need state hospital beds to provide specialized, long-term care,
Wait times for admission for services for the mentally ill are already too long,
The state is not offering unemployment benefits, severance or extension of health care benefits to hundreds of Dix workers who will lose their jobs, and
If Dix closes, homeless and prison populations will increase.

We demand that Gov. Perdue and DHHS Sec. Cansler immediately stop moving any patients from Dix and convene an emergency Town Hall public forum by November 1, 2010 so that the community, workers and patients can voice their concerns about the current plan to downsize and close Dorothea Dix hospital.

    I have followed this decision for years, believe I am informed in many aspects of both mental health treatment and the benefits of this hospital. I support its location as is and mission.

    I have a sister in Virginia who is a recipient of services there, and their support system far surpasses that in this area. I would never consider moving her here due to the lack of compassion and support shown to the mentally ill in Wake County. Address;
