Commit to Campus Sustainability at Rutgers University sign now

Rutgers Universitys three main campuses use an enormous amount of resources to fulfill its teaching, research, recreation, dining and operational needs. Often, our natural resource consumption is not maximally efficient. In the process of consumption, we generate a lot of waste, including energy, toxic waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Our patterns of consumption of increasingly scarce resources and production of waste is contributing to outstripping our Earths ability to absorb the harmful effects of such practice, and puts human health increasingly at risk in the long term.

We know, by exemplary corporate, municipal, and higher education initiatives taken elsewhere, that Rutgers can embrace sustainability and still meet its present operational needs. So we need to plan for sustainability. We want to meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations to meet their needs economically, socially, and environmentally. We want Rutgers Universitys resolve to set an example as a leader in sustainable planning.

As a prestigious state university, we must develop a common vision to learn to live sustainably, to lead by example, and to teach the larger community in New Jersey and the nation to use Earths resources judiciously and efficiently. Institutional commitment to sustainability will help us in this quest.

Therefore, we the undersigned members of the Rutgers and New Jersey community endorse the Rutgers Sustainable campaign for Rutgers University commitment to sustainable practice and policy.

Furthermore, we request that President McCormick and the wider Rutgers community endorse the Sustainable Rutgers Campus Initiative in order to:

1. Demonstrate a university-wide commitment to sustainable practice and policy.
2. Assess the current state of sustainable practice at Rutgers and propose plans for a more sustainable future
3. Implement sustainable practice in diverse areas, including but not limited to

a) Green building design for all new construction and building renovation;
b) Clean transportation, including bike lane infrastructure and alternatives to cars;
c) Use of renewable energy such as solar and wind, and of non-toxic building and grounds materials, and of enhanced use of locally-grown and locally-produced products such as building materials and food;
d) Socially and environmentally-conscious purchasing procedures. Enhanced curricular commitment to sustainability across the disciplines
e) Create a Sustainable Campus Committee and Staff who are charged with charting the steps toward sustainability at Rutgers University and advising the Administration in sustainable practice and policy.

We hereby sign our affirmation of support.
