Dear Dr. Hoesley,

This is a petition for the UASOM Medical Education Committee (MEC) to adjust the clerkship grades of the current class of 2011 to bring the intercampus clinical evaluation standards into accord with the Liaison Committee on Medical Educations (LCME) recommendations found in their 2006 accreditation report.

We recognize and appreciate that all three clinical campuses of UASOM offer outstanding instruction. It is a matter of school policy that students receive quantitative clinical evaluations and that these evaluations be based upon uniform standards between the Birmingham, Huntsville and Tuscaloosa clinical campuses. During the April 15th Class of 2011 meeting, you announced that there are statistically significant grading differences between the three campuses. You also expressed doubts as to whether the grades could be properly adjusted by the initial ERAS submission date of September 1st. Given this information, we hold that the 2009-2010 clerkship-grading methods conflict with the LCME recommendations of 2006.

We understand that residency directors nationwide consider clinical grades to be among the most important components of our residency applications. We believe this, in no small part, because it has been emphasized to us repeatedly by UASOM administrators over the last several years. Considering this, it is our belief that many deserving students would be disadvantaged during the 2010-2011 residency application cycle if the current clerkship grades are not expeditiously adjusted. Affected students would not be the only ones to benefit from a fair resolution of this issue. As the next LCME re-accreditation process nears, the medical school itself would be viewed upon more favorably if it acted to more strictly adhere to previous LCME recommendations.

We, the undersigned, know that you and other administrators are working earnestly to address this problem. As most interview offers are extended in September and October, we respectfully urge you and the MEC to resolve these intercampus grading disparities by August 31st.
