Clinic Jackets, CCM sign now

Dear CCM Administration,

Those of us who have signed below do so in an understanding that it is important for students to maintain a professional appearance during their clinical presence and that the jacket requirement is the way in which this will be achieved at NCNM.

It is essential to us that the jackets worn during this clinical presence are safe, sweatshop-free, made of natural, breathable and sustainable fabric, have a comfortable and flattering fit and offer CCM students a choice between at least two length options and two color options.

SAFETY:
The use of moxabustion and cupping in our clinic requires students to utilize lighters, matches, burning cotton balls and lit incense sticks. It is important that the jackets be made of non-melting materials.
A 1986 article, The danger of polyester-cotton blends - fabric flammability, showed that some polyester-cotton blend clothing can burn up to 25 percent faster than clothing made from pure synthetics such as polyester or from pure cellulosic fibers such as cotton or rayon.
When a 100\% polyester fiber does catch on fire, it does not burn as quickly as cotton or other natural materials, but it will melt onto skin, as will a polyester blend. For this reason, we prefer a jacket made from natural, cellulosic fibers, that is fitted properly, so as to insure a safer experience for students and less liability in the clinic.
Most upscale kitchens require 100\% cotton chefs jackets for this reason.

SWEATSHOP-FREE
Sweatshop-free clothing honors workers basic rights, including safe working conditions and livable wages and contributes to a more just and equitable global society.

NATURAL, BREATHABLE AND SUSTAINABLE FABRIC
Students working in the clinical setting are required to perform physical activities that can cause them to become warm and sweat, and for this reason, it is important that the fabric of the jackets is breathable. This helps the students to maintain a comfortable body temperature and avoid unpleasant body odors while working with patients.

Many students at NCNM have skin sensitivities that require them to wear natural fabrics, free from unnecessary toxins.

With the current Gulf oil crisis, it is even more important that we begin utilizing sustainable materials, rather than petroleum, for all aspects of our work. To be true leaders, and set proper examples for our patients, we need to invest in a sustainable fabric for our clinic jackets.

Students wearing these jackets will iron them before coming clinic. A group of students will collect donations to provide an iron and ironing board on campus to make this easier. Natural fabrics will wrinkle slightly during wear, but we believe that this looks acceptable and that natural fabrics are what the true masters of this medicine have worn for centuries.

COMFORTABLE AND FLATTERING FIT
Professional appearance during clinical presence is such that doctor or intern can hold space for the patient without the latter having an acute awareness of the practitioners clothing. The focus of the treatment should be the patient. To maintain this, it is important that the student is comfortable in the jacket and has the ability to perform all aspects of treatment and other jobs required during shift . Once again, it is important that the jacket fits well in order to refrain from catching it on fire while performing moxabustion or cupping.

A flattering fit, means that while the jacket may include aspects of Asian culture, it still fits within current American societal expectations for professional fashionability. If the jacket cannot do this, it will draw the patients appearance to the practitioners clothing, thereby making it unprofessional and undermining the treatment process.

Choice between two length options and two color options
Patients utilizing Chinese medicine are looking for an individualized and holistic experience, rather than the one-size-fits-all quality that pervades allopathic medicine. Much of that experience comes from honoring the practitioner as an individual, with their own unique knowledge, style and treatment methodology.

As we are taught at NCNM, the world is holographic and it is the human being who is charged with assisting in the ease of flow between the macrocosm and the microcosm. It is important that students look professional and united in their jackets while also maintaining their identity and individuality. The CCM students should have a choice between two jacket length options and two color options. This offers a choice to the student regarding how they will present themselves to patients in the clinic and honors their role as an individual within the vast scope of this medicine and the rest of the student body, while at the same time, honoring their connection to the whole.
----

In light of this information, we request that the following jackets be the main options for students in the clinic. (The following prices are for individual orders, the jackets may be cheaper if we order them as a group).

I agree with the arguments for sustainability, safety, comfort, and fit. In making a symbolic statement against the white coat, we have to ensure that same statement does not draw attention by being obviously unflattering. Our uniform should reflect our e
