City of San Jose Motorcycle Parking sign now

We, the undersigned, as citizens, residents, employees, consumers, and visitors of the City of San Jose, demand the creation of safe, secure motorcycle and motor scooter parking at all parking lots and parking facilities within the City of San Jose, including but not limited to, privately owned and managed public parking facilities, and all municipally owned parking lots located with the City of San Jose.

The popularity of motorcycles as a daily form of transportation is skyrocketing. With the substantial increase in gasoline prices, traffic, and congestion- many drivers are leaving their cars and SUVs at home in favor of a motorcycle as a primary mode of transportation.

Motorcycles reduce pollution, reduce traffic congestion, reduce parking congestion, and reduce roadway wear and tear. All this results in lower costs to the City of San Jose for roadway repair and maintenance, reduces the need for new roadways, and reduces the need for large parking lots and parking structures land which could instead be used for more shops and restaurants, parks and green space, or child recreation areas.

However, there is a serious lack of safe, secure, and affordable off-street parking for motorcycles within both the City of San Jose and the County of Santa Clara. Although the a City of San Jose owns and operates numerous public parking facilities within the downtown area, almost all of which offer free parking after 6:00PM and on all weekend days to automobile drivers, NONE are able to be utilized by motorcycles. In fact the parking of a motorcycle in a downtown parking garage or lot, even when designated as free, will result in the issuance of a $25 parking ticket.

Within the entire downtown area of San Jose, there are only 70 motorcycle parking spots, 56 of which are around the perimeter of SJSU.

Within the entire downtown area of San Jose, there are NO public parking facilities, garages, or lots which allow motorcycle parking.

We the undersigned demand the creation of off street motorcycle parking in all public parking lots, whether privately or municipally owned.

We further demand that the City of San Jose create free on-street motorcycle parking, utilizing locations that are currently designated as no parking zones, indicated with red curbs, simply because there is no room for a full automobile parking space, or in-between currently marked metered spaces.

By utilizing these otherwise unusable parking areas, the City can effectively increase the number of parking spaces downtown without cost, or at the expense of metered spaces, and can accomplish this without reducing any current on-street automobile parking spaces. More parking means more people patronizing area shops and businesses and bringing more consumers and businesses into our downtown areas.

In addition, we demand that all parking lots and facilities with designated motorcycle parking spaces locate them in a secure area which is in close proximity to and easily visible to parking attendants or security personnel. Where motorcycle parking can not be reasonably located in immediate proximity to parking or security personnel, such as the case with most on-street parking, a metal post or other securing device should be placed to allow the motorcycle to be chained or locked.

We, the undersigned, petition the City of San Jose with this demand for the designation and allowance of motorcycle parking in all public parking lots, whether privately or municipally owned and operated, the creation of free on street motorcycle parking utilizing zones currently designated as no parking for no other reason except due to size limitations, and the installation of securing devices to which motorcycles can be locked to in areas of off-street parking facilities not visible to parking lot attendants and security personnel or for any on-street motorcycle parking location.
