Citizens For Taking Back Houston sign now

Dear Mayor Bill White,

We, the undersigned citizens of Houston and surrounding cities, would like to call to your attention the ongoing problems perpetuated upon our city and towns due to the enormous influx of New Orleans residents after Hurricane Katrina who were invited in by you.

These problems include, but are not limited to, increased crime, i.e. murders, rapes, burglaries, robberies, thefts, arsons, and assaults; increased drug usage and affiliated crimes; increased violence in our already overburdened schools and the increased Houstonian tax dollars that go along with schooling these children; increased loitering; increased destruction to apartment complexes and hotels being used by evacuees; increased numbers of vehicles on our streets that are very obviously not in accordance with Texas laws and emissions ordinances.

Our police departments cannot keep up with the unbelievably high amount of problem calls, nor should they be required to. They have had a hard enough time struggling with handling the number of calls from people who live here on a regular basis, but now their job has become almost impossible, which endangers the citizens of this city.

On top of that, our property values are plummeting at an alarming rate due to these evacuees being housed in apartments and "temporary" trailer parks in close proximity to homeowners' neighborhoods. The simple enjoyment of those homes is being taken away from citizens who feel that their lives and well-being are endangered by going out after dark or what may happen to their families and hard-earned belongings.

It is no surprise that Houston has its share of crime, but a lot of the New Orleans evacuees who have taken up residence here are criminals and sexual predators. We the undersigned also feel that continued handouts and incentives given to these individuals will ensure that they will not leave and go back to New Orleans, or at the very least, that they will never get a job and become contributing members of our society.

Because you are the one who welcomed them with open arms, we the undersigned feel it is your duty first and foremost to the citizens who voted you into power and whose city you run to do something about the problems these evacuees have caused. The monetary loss to this city is yet to be realized, especially in a city that was working so hard to elevate itself to the level of a top-notch tourist area under Mayor Brown.

Your tenure as Mayor is limited, as it will last only as long as you are voted in. But the financial loss to the citizens and business owners of this city will affect us for many years to come. It is time to step up to the plate, Mayor White, and start doing something for the people that voted you into office.
