Citizens Against CONFEDERATE HISTORY MONTH sign now

it is important for all Virginians to reflect upon our Commonwealths shared history, to understand the sacrifices of the Confederate leaders, soldiers and citizens during the period of the Civil War, and to recognize how our history has led to our present; and to recognize how our history has led to our present

This statement is one of the original principles taken from Governor Robert F. McDonnells April 6th proclamation of April as Confederate History Month in the Commonwealth of Virginia. This decree is aimed at bolstering tourism and celebrating the dynamic history of this state.

The plan fact is the confederacy was based upon slavery! Though Virginia was the headquarters of the Confederate movement in America, it doesnt mean that in 2010 we should have to unwillingly be subjected to a celebration of its account. The Governor was wrong to adopt such an institution without considering all of the states residents.

Further in his proclamation it was noted all Virginians can appreciate the fact that when ultimately overwhelmed by the insurmountable numbers and resources of the Union Army, the surviving, imprisoned and injured Confederate soldiers gave their word and allegiance to the United States of America. As a native Virginia I do not appreciate that at all. Upon reading this, my thoughts immediately detour to; what would happen had the secession of the union succeeded. Where would our nation be then? The verbiage even reads as if some amount of pity should be measured upon the rebels because the Union numbers and resources were so much greater they had no choice but to surrender.

The British Statesman Edmund Burke remarked Those who don't know history are destined to repeat it. But he never said anything about rubbing the thousands of taxpaying citizens noses in the putrid stench of a damned culture. This is truly appalling and Gov. McDonnell should immediately resend this proclamation and apologize to the citizenship of the Commonwealth.
