Change Servite College's Uniform Policy sign now

The Servite College uniform policy was put into place at the start of the 2005 school year under the new principal Dr. P Cox.

This policy states that students of the school are required to wear their school uniform to and from school changing for subject that require a sports uniform (Physical Education, Dance, Outdoor Education etc.) Here is a basic outline of what a student would have to do in order to meet the rules.

-If a student has a physical subject before break 1 the student would need to arrive at school in their school uniform and then be excused from contact in order to get changed. After the subject has concluded the student would be required to get changed within that period or at break 1.
-If a student has a physical subject between breaks 1 & 2 the student would need to get changed at break 1 and then after the subject has concluded the student would be required to get changed within that period or at break 2.
-If a student has a physical subject after break 2 the student would need to get changed at break 2 and then after the subject has concluded the student would be required to get changed within that period or after the school day has concluded.

The only exceptions to this rule are as followed:
1- If a student is included in an after-school event that requires them to wear a sports uniform they are allowed to get changed at break 2 into their sports uniform prepared for the end of day event. Students are then only allowed to wear their sports uniform HOME.
2- If a student has more than 1 physical subject a day they are allowed to wear their sports uniform between both of those periods.

Students changing uniforms within their sports period takes up valuable time for longer activities such as an on-going sporting game. Students in years 8, 9 and 10 are required to do at least two 55 minute periods of physical education each week. If you take away 10 minutes of changing uniform time (5 minutes before and after the period) thats 90 minutes of physical activity over a school week. A growing person needs AT LEAST if not more than 30 minutes of physical activity per day.

Outdoor Education, an elective choosable by students from year 9 and up is a physical subject which involves a more advanced subject of Health and Physical Education. Within this course there is a cost included on top of the school fees. If a Parent or Guardian is paying for their child to do this course they surley want their child to be completing it, not spending time changing clothes.

If an average student does two periods of physical education each week, changing before and after each period, they will waste at least 8.7 hours minimium changing uniforms in a year. Surley Servite College will realise that we go to school to learn, not to spend time all our time changing back-and-forth into different uniforms.

In servite college there are 2 change rooms, if at least 60 people need to get changed this is not enough. There are two other sets of small toilet blocks in the school which many other students need to get changed in. This is very unhygenic changing clothes in a toilet block but many students will HAVE to do it at least twice a week.

Is all of this really worth students having to go home in formal school uniform to solve the College's view on "tardiness"? I ask you.
