CaveRockDiscrimination sign now

Please protect the rights of all people and end injustice and discrimination as Cave Rock.

Cave Rock is a very special place, that many people hold dear for various reasons.

The Washoe tribe of Nevada and California want to ban certain user groups because the tribe "honor this site in such a way that only certain traditional practitioners of Washoe culture are designated to approach and do ceremony at Cave Rock."

Members of the Washoe Tribe have continually emphasized the significance of Cave Rock as a religious site and, in particular, have emphasized that it is a sacred site upon which only a few male tribal members, and no women, can visit.

To ban certain people is an unconstitutional closure of public property for religious purposes.

No one is preventing the tribe from their traditional use of Cave Rock. It is unjust to ban rock climbers from Cave Rock because in their view rock climbers touch the rock for too long and many climbers are female.

Cave rock was littered with trash (e.g. broken bottles and human waste) before climbers cleaned it up.
The climbing area is within 20 feet of a tunnel blasted through the rock and a busy highway.
Many rock climbers connect spiritually with the Earth through climbing.

Cave Rock is a unique rock climbing resource, there is no comparable climbing in California or Nevada.

Please sign our petition asking the Forest Service to not ban access to cave rock to certain user groups, but to enact a compromise where the user groups share access to the site at different times. This is the FAIR and JUST solution, and a similar arrangement has worked well at Devil's Tower in Wyoming. Thank you!!

Climbing creates much less impact than a 4 lane freeway, which already exists at Cave Rock. Please do not ban climbing there and open up the rest of the cliff to climbing. It is benefical to the economy of the Lake Tahoe area.
