She [Ms Parrish] said.

Listen to what she said as reported in The Globe & Mail:

When first asked by The Globe and Mail about the comment, Ms. Parrish said it had not been intended for publication.

"If you use it, don't bother calling here again," she said of her comment, which was made in public and caught by TV cameras.

She added that she would work to restrict the access that journalists have in Parliament if the comment were reported. "If you guys want to keep the privilege of working in that area without being held back, I would be very careful with this one."

For those readers who've already forgotten Carolyn Parrish's five minutes of fame, let's recap: On Feb. 26, reporters overheard the federal MP for Mississauga-Centre (Ont.) sputter the following remark : "Damn Americans. I hate those bastards." Ms. Parrish later claimed she was having a "private conversation" when she said these words. She might have set matters right somewhat if she'd followed this disgraceful act with a contrite, unambiguous apology and then kept mum. Instead, she appeared on Mike Bullard's late night comedy television show a few days later and played to the crowd. The left-wing MP bragged she hadn't been reprimanded by the Prime Minister, and said her remark "obviously is something that I believe in." She further declared that "I can't even promise [such an outburst] won't happen again."
Parrish is seen as a candidate with political view left of the Liberal party with anti-American sentiment, as seen from the publicity in the newspaper last year. This may not sit well with the Martin caucus and may not be in accord with common Canadian view. One of Parrish's major support base comes from Muslims and Palestinians, and the re-drawn electoral boundary shifting west may weaken her support. Some of the Catholic votes may be alienated by Parrish's strong support for same sex marriage and abortion. The Jewish votes would tend to avoid Parrish. The ethnic South Asian votes are undecided, but may be affected by the current anti-Liberal climate. Bob Dechert is an experienced politician and would do well to represent the people of the district. From information on the Internet, he appears to hold moderate and balanced views. It will be interesting to see how events unfold.

We doubt very much that the vast majority of Canadians feel even remotely this way. There may be a great many Canadians who disagree with America, particularly over the race to war against Iraq, but few would stand and damn Americans as a people and call them "bastards" worthy of hate.

And for an elected politician to do so in public, at the end of a scrum, is simply beyond consideration.

The Honourable Anne McLellan
Minister of Public Security and Emergency Preparedness
Sir Wilfrid Laurier Building, 13th Floor
Ottawa, ON
K1A 0P8

Dear Minister McLellan,
I write to you today regarding Mohamed Harkat, Adil Charkaoui, Hassan Almrei, Mahmoud Jaballah and Mohammad Mahjoub, who have been arrested and imprisoned under "security certificates". In the case of Mr. Mahjoub, this has meant almost four years in prison without charge!
I met with members of the men's families recently and was disturbed by their stories. All of the families described lives that have been torn apart by unfounded accusations. Lives lived in constant fear that their brothers, husbands, fathers will be deported back to countries where they face almost certain torture or even death.
I understand that we live in a post 9/11 world but surely our security concerns can be satisfied by less abusive measures than a secret trial, indefinite imprisonment and deportation to torture or death?
Thank you for your time and attention to this very important matter. I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Carolyn Parrish, MP
Mississauga Centre
