Canadians Against Asparaginase sign now
We The People of Canada, here by submit our rejection of Health Canada's proposition of the addition of Asparaginase, that would be devried from Aspergillus niger ASP72 or Aspergillus oryzae , to the three following food categories:
1.Bread
2.Flour and whole wheat flour
3.Unstandardised foods .
Addition of Asparaginase from aforementioned sources, would require the following amemendents the Food and Drug Regulations:
Bread, flour, and whole wheat flour have standards of identity in the Regulations that control which ingredients these foods may contain. Therefore, paragraph B.13.021(h) would be amended to allow asparaginase to be used in bread or white bread; paragraph B.13.001 (e)(iii) would be amended to allow asparaginase in flour, white flour, enriched flour or enriched white flour; and paragraph B.13.005 (d)(iii) would be amended to allow asparaginase in whole wheat flour or entire wheat flour.
The listing in Table V for asparaginase in unstandardized foods will enable use of asparaginase in foods such as cakes, cookies and biscuits, French fries, potato chips and other unstandardized potato-based products, reaction flavours and processed breakfast cereals. Although French fries do not have a standard of identity in the Food and Drug Regulations, frozen French fries are standardized under the Processed Products Regulations (PPR) which are administered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Consequentially, amendments to the PPR will also need to be made to enable the use of asparaginase in frozen French fries ( Source Health Canada, http://www.hc-sc.gc.ca/fn-an/consultation/init/_dec2009-asparaginase/asp-niger-draft-ebauche-eng.php)
We are Canadians that feel the further addition of chemicals or otherwise named enzymes to our food supply is unsatisfactory. In the 21st century, we as Canadians come into contact on a daily basis a staggering list of chemicals via our food supply. While we realize that cancer is a unfortunate and sometimes sadly terminal disease, it is the agreement that cancer is a genetically based illness with strong environmental triggers. And it is the agreement of the undersigned that cancer as with many potentially terminal illness can best be tried to avoid through healthy eating and life style choices.
It is under strong opinion, that regardless of the fact that other Developed Nations have approved the use of Asparaginase, Health Canada is through this proposition acting in an irresponsible manner. We feel it is Health Canada's mandate via the Federal Parliament of Canada to promote wellness through healthy eating and life style choices not via the addition of chemicals to our food supply or other items we may consume for the sole purposes of nutrition. Furthermore, acrylamide the chemical that it is purposed asparaginase will neutralize via hydrolization is a naturally occurring in the aforementioned food categories. Also, in clinical trials it is inconclusive that acrylamide actually acts as a carcongenic. In conclusion, we feel the potential benefits do not out way potential known or unknown side effects. We urge you as our federal representatives to act in the best interest of all Canadians and to not approve the use of asparaginase in any food category
