Campaign to Call for Extended Producer Responsibility sign now

This letter is intended for all Canadians, government officials and corporations

To whom this may concern, March 2009
This letter is in regards to the ever growing problem with the waste that we all produce and the waste management strategies that we use. Being a citizen of this great country, it has surfaced recently that a portion of our waste management practices are quite outdated compared to many parts of the world. When we speak about a portion of our waste management practices, we are speaking about the lack of producer responsibility.
It has become quite evident that many countries, especially those countries of the developed world have begun to implement new policies that place the responsibility of end of life products on the producer or the polluter. We live in a country where technology thrives and automobiles are everywhere. It can even be said that as North Americans, we are the largest polluters and consumers. With that, is it not our duty to see that the products that we all use be disposed of in a proper manner? How come so much of our electronic waste is being exported to Asia? Did we not sign the Basel Convention which is supposed to ensure that this type of practice is not happening in our great country?
We, as Canadians want to come together and fight for EPR policies in our own country. We dont want to read about it in a text book and hear about how successful Germany has been with EPR policies. We want to hear about it when we buy a product; we want to hear about it when we turn on the television; we want to hear about because we are taking part in it.
In the Past few years, Canada has been striving to become a leader in environmental protection or we at least say we want to be a leader, but we never really contribute much. This is our chance to catch up to the rest of the world and start implementing extended producer responsibility policy. We are a strong, wealthy nation who wants to look good on the international stage but sometimes have a fear of change. We need to overcome this fear and work toward a more sustainable lifestyle. If we all take responsibility for the products we consume, then we will be able to ensure that not only are the products being disposed of properly, but that the products are being designed with environmental considerations.
There will always be those people who oppose and there will always be the industries who oppose, but its time for us to come together as a country, citizens, government officials and corporations alike and end this fiasco that is a waste management issue. We have the power and the money to implement such a policy; we just need the will and the way. As Canadians, we can all find the will, but we ask for help with the way. Let us come together and fight for EPR policy in Canada.
Yours truly,
Concerned Canadian Citizens
