Campaign for Democracy, tolerance and peace in Ethiopia sign now

We, the undersigned, petition you thereby to apply every effort to stop the few but vocal anti-democratic and provocative Diaspora Ethiopian media sources harming the general political atmosphere in Ethiopia that can lead to a devastating situation in Ethiopia and the whole East Africa.

Since our country began developing its young democracy in the late 1990's; the amount of hatred, discrimination, incitement and propaganda transmitted via radio and internet "news" sources have drastically increased. Ethiopia held its first ever multi-party elections in its long history and it continues its economic progress out of the ruins left by the Marxist dictatorship government of the 1980's, which the whole international community is well aware of. But the struggle for more peace and real democracy continues mostly because the current Ethiopian government displayed its failure to materialize successful elections. However at this time, the dangerous role of the radical wing of some opposition parties and their supporting militant/separatist organizations is the most threat to the progress of democracy in Ethiopia.

We, members of Ethiopian Society for Peace & Democracy (ESPD) as well as other Diaspora Ethiopians living in America, Europe, Australia and Asia ask those in higher governmental & institutional positions to EQUALLY demand & influence ALL parties to peacefully & jointly contribute to the continuing development of Ethiopia's young democracy.

The quantity and influence of the violent propaganda waged by the radical wings of some opposition parties has been recorded for a long time. For instance, just last year before the American congress elections began, extremist parts of the opposition hidden in the self-contradictory mission of "democracy," incited hatred among Ethiopians and invented wild charges against the leaders in Ethiopia claiming "thousands of Oromos" are killed. It was a tragic, unfortunate and systematic propaganda trying to spread hate and provoke the Diaspora both against the government and against moderate Ethiopian opposition parties in the parliament. We, most of the members of the ESPD in Ethiopia and our friends in Diaspora are ethnically Oromo Ethiopians ourselves. Granted it was approaching a deadline during the US Congress elections period to promote & pass a new Bill supporting a collection of extremists' propaganda; however, to actually create such inhumane & baseless accusations overnight, to use such propaganda fomenting violence and sparking deep hatred between supporters of Ethiopian parties was in contrast to human reason and logic.
Yet all records show even more propaganda from the extreme wing was exposed and these radical groups previously claimed that specific members of opposition supporters were "tortured" for trying to cross the Kenya/Ethiopia border in November of 2006. In complete contrast to their accusations, the extreme opposition groups were again silenced when the supposedly "tortured" Ethiopians miraculously came out without even a single scratch on their bodies for the Ethiopian public to witness. However the false and violent accusations made by these extreme groups are never silenced or even challenged outside of mainland Ethiopia because their Diaspora media sources control & hide all evidence showing their false reportings. Thus this media tragic continues causing Diaspora Ethiopians to be outraged once more and create more hatred & division between the Ethiopian people.

Another case of exposed propaganda was made public near the end of December when another radical group's propaganda radio service known as "Voice of Oromo Liberation" based in Germany reported to our citizens living in Wellega region and western Oromia regions claiming that the Ethiopian army is losing the war in Kismayo town of Somalia and thus telling all Oromos to take up arms & wage guerrilla war against their own government's army & police. Not only such propaganda and call for violence was designed against the same Ethiopian government & army that is 45\% made up of Oromos themselves, but also in contrast to their propaganda claims, our troops came out victorious, which created the best chance for democracy to start in Somalia along with Somalia's government.
In addition to radio andother sources, websites used by the radical wing of opposition groupshave been the source of the most propaganda and hate speech. At the endof December when Ethiopian troops went to Somalia to defend our countryand defend the Somali weak government from a radical Islamic expansionthreat, one of the most extreme opposition websites forged more news. This news website called "ETHIOPIANREVIEW" has already beenassociated with the enemies of Ethiopia for a long time. Again, onDecember 24, it used a picture of a fallen American helicopter in Iraqas a propaganda tool to claim that Somalis shot down an Ethiopianhelicopter instead. As the photo copy of that day's frontpage fromETHIOPIANREVIEW.com suggest(http://www.eyeonethiopia.com/images/ethio_review_lie.jpg)(link) the helicopter photo and story was another lieand a dangerous propaganda against the government & its peacefulopposition parties in the parliament who !voted for the war to defend the sovereignity of our country. The realpicture was from this website(http://www.bernama.com.my/bernama/v3/news.php?id=208221)(link) and it was not an Ethiopian helicopter at all.Even most recently, it used a video made by an Eritrean government'ssupporter to spark more anti-Ethiopian government atmosphere in theDiaspora so that innocent Diaspora Ethiopians would be mind controlledand be used to protest against fabricated issues and holddemonstrations in Washington D.C. based on lies and propaganda made bythis extreme wing of the opposition. Just recently in January 2007, thewebsite of the main opposition party, Kinijit (CUD), used the mostdangerous form of propaganda displaying human torture pictures fromIndonesian prison cells and claiming they were pictures of Ethiopianprison cells. Granted Ethiopian prisons are poorly maintained due toeconomic limitations of the whole country, it was simply outrageous toever claim such tortures occur!ing as well as to use the prison photos of a country located almost 10,000 miles away from Ethiopia. These false pictures were quicklyexposed by other news websites but the deep hate and outrage inflictedupon Diaspora Ethiopians is still carrying its longterm side effects.Such unprofessional, anti-democracy and often dangerous reportings bythe radical wing of opposition parties, separatist groups and theirradio, website & other sources needs to be fully condemned by theinternational community.

As an example, one of the moderate medias in the Diaspora known as Hagerfikerradio.com fully exposed a dangerous propaganda from the famous opposition party website of CUD( Kinijit), which is displayed below [www.kinijitethiopia.org ]
(scanned evidence from CUD/Kinijit website)

According to further investigation of the original source of the torture photos, they were identified as photos from Indonesian prison cells documented by an Australian rights website for the "East Temor Human Rights Centre"

In addition, it is widely known that there is also a big gap and disconnectedness even between the moderate opposition parties that are now working peaceful inside the current Ethiopian parliament and the radical opposition parties who are constantly waging propaganda and violent guerrilla wars not ONLY on the government but also on any moderate opposition party members who chose a peaceful path and democratic means to solve Ethiopia's issues. Some opposition groups are not only defaming and insulting moderate opposition parties but they are also fighting within themselves to the point that the main Ethiopian opposition party of Kinijit (CUD) is now cut apart in more than two pieces without any ability to lead itself, let alone try to lead a whole country.
It is in the best interest of all western nations and institutions who want to see democracy prevail in Ethiopia to balance their diplomatic and other pressures & demands on both the government and the opposition parties, especially the radical wing of the opposition. One can not expect Ethiopia to fully develop her democracy while at the same time financing, allowing or supporting militant organizations to operate against Ethiopia. Unless the international community pressures all sides and demand radical opposition groups as well as militant organizations to stop provoking violence & divisions in Ethiopia; it is unreasonable to seek any major improvements in Ethiopia.
We, ESPD as well as Diaspora Ethiopians all around the world, urge leaders of the international community to advise the radical parts of opposition parties to adhere to international laws & ethics of journalism and to wage their struggle peacefully and constitutionally. We also ask all concerned international leaders to contact all those responsible for the above incidents and advise them to be aware of the consequence of such violent, anti-democratic journalism, propaganda and activities; which is often more divisions, more distrust & violence and most of all more bitterness passed down to future generations & children of Ethiopia.

Despite all of these issues against democracy, it needs to be noted that nothing has been done to hold these individuals, "news" websites and radio programs accountable. Instead, only the government of Ethiopia and moderate opposition parties have been the only parts of the Ethiopian political stage that have been blamed for all the issues of the press & their consequences in Ethiopia. Despite the government and the parliament creating a very clear, demanding and appropriate press laws of conduct, it has been the only side pressured by international institution even after it made all the laws after carefully considering the differences in the social, economic, ethnic, historical and cultural makeup between the citizens of Western nations and the citizens of Ethiopia who are clearly very inexperienced in democracy as well as inexperienced in promoting it via journalism; and also after realizing the sensitivity of ethnic differences that are being agitated by false, defaming, unprofessional & violence provoking journalism practices seen from some of the opposition parties (particularly those based from the Diaspora.)

The last few years have been the first time in Ethiopian history where freedom of the press was guaranteed and where peaceful criticism of the government & its supporters was seen as a positive asset in the national political stage. But none of this progress can be sustain if one of the various sides of the political stage disobey the laws and rules of the country. Knowing that a healthy and tolerant journalism is vital for democracy to flourish, we strongly ask those international leaders in the position to demand changes, to advise not only the government but also advise the radical wings of opposition parties to adhere to democratic, tolerant and peaceful principles.

We, ESPD as well as Diaspora Ethiopians living in America, Europe, Australia and Asia, call on the UN & EU representatives, American & European policy makers, His Excellency George Bush, Her Excellency Angela Merkel and other concerned leaders of the international community to:

1) Put an inquiry commision to further investigate the anti-democratic nature and the destructive role of some foreign based Ethiopian opposition & millitant group media sources.
2) Advise these bias and usually violence provoking media sources to adhere to the same democratic, peaceful and high standards that is expected of the Ethiopian government.
3) Advise these media sources about the consequence of their actions in initiating and then perpetuating the cycle of aggression between some opposition groups and the government.
4) Advise these media sources in the Diaspora to stop attacking & defaming peaceful and moderate opposition parties inside Ethiopia.
5) Advise radical wings of some opposition parties to stop spreading hate and intolerance between ethnic groups sparking tensions & violence using the internet and radio.
6) Advise radical wings of some opposition parties to put an immediate end to harrassment and racial/ethnic discrimination & narrow catagorizations against government supporters in the Diaspora.
7) Setup an investigation to probe the frequent media circulations of incitement on citizens to bear arms, particularly done several times by "Voice of Oromo Liberation" radio in Germany, and USA.
8) Advise the government about the positive changes that can be made by the extremist media sources and groups, so that complete trust can develop between all Ethiopian parties and groups.
9) Advise the government to use more resources to peacefully contain violent riots that will occasionally happen as long as separatist groups & radical parts of the opposition provoke it via the radio and websites.

10) Advise the government to have more dialogue with separatist groups who are mostly based in Asmara, Eritrea militarily and based in Germany, USA and other nations in other ways.
11) Advice the Ethiopian and Eritrean governments to go back to dialogue with no extra agenda except peace, democracy and brotherhood for and between the people of Ethiopia and Eritrea.
