Call for Shared Sacrifices sign now

We, the undersign, are appalled by the grandstanding of a minority number of House Representatives and Senators who have gone on record as to oppose all negotiated measures if they include any initiative which result in an increase of taxes collected. This minority group of elected officials are holding the good faith and credit hostage to a narrow political agenda.

The question of the national debt needs to be addressed now. A shared sacrifice compromise was put forth that would modify certain entitlement programs, reduce overall tax rates for the middle class and would close those loop holes in the tax code which gives tax relief to profitable corporations and those in the upper tax brackets. Those in the Republican Caucus have stated that such a compromise was unacceptable. It is seemingly permissible to cut spending on programs that assist the most vulnerable Americans, but, in their opinion, it is not permissible to request that those who are basically receiving rebates continue to receive tax relief.

Hard time require hard decisions, decisions based on the situation and not upon a campaign slogan. In taking a no tax increase stand, these minority elected officials are ignoring history. President Ronald Regan increased taxes to deal with a budget deficit, and we entered a period labeled the Regan Prosperity. Both Presidents H. W. Bush and Bill Clinton raised taxes and we saw a robust economy. President George W. Bush cut taxes and we reaped an economy of slow growth and a disastrous turndown.

We the undersigned are registered voters: Republicans, Democrats and Independents. We will remember the actions taken by our elected Congressional Representatives and Senators when we enter the voting booth. We call for any resolution to the federal deficit be based on shared sacrifices and include both budget cuts and provisions to increase income through the modification of tax loop holes and subsidies. We call for those representatives who are refusing any compromises on the ground of fulfilling a campaign promise to consider that our great nation is a product of strategic compromises required for the common good. May these representatives take the actions of statesmen and stateswomen, patriots all, and not those of petty, partisan politicians.

In agreement of the above, I affix my name.
