Build the New High School Where It's Needed sign now

The gift of land by the Vemer family, generous as it was, should not dictate where the School District chooses to build a new high school. Many thoughtful, concerned parents and citizens believe that the following issues lead to the conclusion that the school should be built in a location in the northern part of the school district:

(1) The high school should be located in the vicinity of the people who need it. There are several feeder schools in the northern part of the school district and a large, rapidly growing population, but there is no high school there.

(2) The Vemer site is a particularly poor choice, owing to serious deficiencies in infrastructure: roads, sewer, and water. The expense to make required improvements would be many millions of dollars, and the local governments have not budgeted any funds to meet these needs. We the undersigned do not want our tax dollars diverted from other important projects already in the planning stage to meet these needs, and we will oppose additional taxes for this purpose.

(3) The timetable for opening the school will sacrifice student safety. It is not plausible that funds, planning, and construction all can make roads ready for the planned school opening in 2010, or even years later. New Haven Road is a narrow road without shoulders containing a dangerous S-curve coupled with a narrow bridge. Rangeline Road has no shoulders. The stretch of WW, a state highway, from Columbia leading to Rangeline Road has an elevated accident rate and a death rate 2.8 times the average (MoDOT data). The safety of our students must come first! It would be unconscionable to plan to build a school with no detailed, firm, and funded plan to make the roads safe before the school opens.

(4) A remote site is environmentally irresponsible. The resulting additional use of fuel and the consequent greenhouse gases formed will do irreparable harm to the environment and society.

(5) It doesnt make economic sense to use the Vemer site. Citizens will bear the personal burden of additional fuel expense. The School District will bear the burden of additional buses and busing routes, inescapable costs that over the long term cumulatively will be many millions of dollars. Every dollar diverted to transportation is a dollar taken away from the education of our students!

In consideration of the above, the undersigned request that the new high school be built in a location within the northern part of the school district and give notice that building the high school at the Vemer site will jeopardize our approval of future requests by the School Board for voter approval of additional funds or bonds that would be used to build the high school at that site.

If the Board is worried about Hickman becoming a "ghetto school" they could offer a curriculum that would attract many different student...for example why not consider an International Baccaluareate program? Put the school where the students are. Address,

The Vermer site should be out of the question - it would cost too much for the infrastructure, which could not even be in place in time; environmentally and safety wise it is a bad choice. Address, Zip Code 65203
