Blockbuster is not youth friendly sign now

We are very insulted and concerned by how young people are treated in your Blockbuster stores. While there are no signs that indicate that backpacks must be left at the counter with cashier, Blockbuster staff persons often make young people leave their backpacks with them. However, this rule is only enforced/applied by Blockbuster staff persons with young customers and therefore adults are permitted to carry their purses or bags while young people have to leave their bags at the counter.

The treatment young people receive in your stores violates our rights that are guaranteed to us under s.1 of the Ontario Human Rights Code. This section reads that Every person has a right to equal treatment with respect to services, goods and facilities, without discrimination because of race, ancestry, place of origin, colour, ethnic origin, citizenship, creed, sex, sexual orientation, age, marital status, family status or disability.

We believe the reason why young people are asked to leave their backpacks with the cashier is because of stereotypes about youth that they all steal. Treating young people based on stereotypes is not right. We believe the way youth are treated by stores is connected and varies according to their appearance (tattoos, piercing, and style of dress), age, race, gender, occupation, ethnicity, sexual orientation, income level and ability. We want all forms of discrimination to stop in your stores!

We demand that you communicate with these stores and clearly outline that you will not tolerate young people (or another group protected by the Human Rights Code) being treated discriminatorily in your stores. Despite firmly held perceptions to the contrary, only a very small fraction of youth commit crime and even fewer are involved in the commission of violent crime.

Blockbusters video is owned by Viacom. Viacom is one of the world's biggest entertainment companies - they own BET, MTV, Famous Players and Canada's Wonderland. This corporate bully should treat young people with respect.
