BET: Chicken Noodle Soup and the Cultural Takeover sign now

This petition is for the immediate stopping of BET airing the "Chicken Noodle Soup" video from BET's programming.
Need a stronger reason? Read below:

Since the invention of film, Black people have been a guinea pig of sorts for the distorted ideas and perceptions other people have held of them.

From watermelon eating and minstrel shows to subservient roles and 'shucking and jiving': in many aspects, not much has changed.

According to Bob Johnson, former owner and founder of Black Entertainment Television, we need to concentrate more on wealth building:

"We [need] a different mindset. We [need] to have people praising African Americans who generate wealth as much as" they praise African Americans who are "social activists and community leaders." - Bob Johnson

Really, Bob? Would this be at the expense of all the work these so-called "Social activists and community leaders" have put forth in an effort to progress us as a people?

With BET being the counter-culture response to MTV (a channel that less than 20 years ago refused to show Michael Jackson's "Beat It" video because they didn't play "Black music"), viewership of Black Entertainment Television skyrocketed.

BET became a music source for people who didn't want to wait for Black music to be filtered through White America via MTV. If BET were around in the 50's, it would have shown Rock n' Roll (a form of Black music internationally credited to have been 'invented' by Little Richard) and MTV would have caught on during the 60's.

Instead of waiting for Black music to be spoon-fed to them, many Americans preferred to get Black music from its source: the ratings and potential market proved to be too much for Viacom (MTV's parent company) to ignore.

So, Bob Johnson inevitably sold BET for $3 billion in 2000 to Viacom, parent company of CBS, MTV, VH-1 and UPN, although he initially held the title of chairman and CEO.

Does this really mean much if such staple shows 'BET News' are strategically cut 'to build more wealth via ratings' or shows like 'Comic View' are literally streamed from the station at a level unchecked like no time before?

Really, Bob. Are you really going to use 'building wealth' to justify the oppression of a people's true voice?

Sounds a lot like hi-tech cultural slavery to me, Bob. But you're richer, right? That's what really counts.

The biggest hi-tech lynching of a show that was directed towards teens would have to be '106 & Park'.

Once hosted by a Black woman named Free, and a Black male named AJ, these two very knowledgeable and charismatic hosts wooed their celebrity guests and provided ample entertainment for all.

However, BET is now catering to a 'wider audience'. So the BLACK Entertainment Television network is no longer REALLY for Black people anymore.

In an effort to garner more 'Latino viewers', BET replaced Free with a Latina by the name of Julissa.

As if Black women don't already have a lack of role models, Julissa becomes a proverbial slap in the face for millions of young Black women who could tune to 106 & Park and find a woman who 'looked as they did'.

You see, BET is no longer concerned with being 'Black'. An ultimate symbol of this would be the current showing of the "Chicken Noodle Soup" dance which now has its own video and one time a segment on 106 & Park.

The Chicken Noodle Soup is a modern-day coon dance, highlighted by its 'shucking and jiving' stance and moves. This 'poison' is being fed to our Black babies, something that would not be tolerated on other ethnic channels.

Let's either take back BET from those who have no interest in your cultural pride, but more in this fiscal year's earnings, and let's give Bob Johnson something to reconsider, hoping that money does not drive him as strongly as it did his ancestor's slavemasters, who as Bob stated knew the true meaning by enslaving his forbears the meaning of 'building wealth'.

OR, as Black people, let's simply boycott the channel. It will not send an immediate shock wave to BET, but when we prefer other channels who 'stay true to our image', when BET suddenly decides to offer quality programming, it may be too late.

Retaining value and worth is important. But it has to start from inside, Bob.

From the INside.

I rarely watch television any more, I lost interest in many of the shows as a child. My military time did not allow much televisoin watching either. If I am to watch something, it would not be the tearing apart of my culture (Help yourselves and get rid o
