Basic Rights for Palestinian Political Prisoners sign now

To: The Minister of Foreign Affairs

On August 5th 2004, the over 7 000 Palestinian political prisoners currently detained by Israel began an open ended hunger strike. Human rights organizations have repeatedly decried the appalling treatment and conditions these individuals have been subjected to by Israeli authorities. These condemnations have had no impact on Israeli practices. This reality has forced these mistreated prisoners to engage in a hunger strike to draw attention to their plight. We express our solidarity with the prisoners and support their demand that their treatment in detention adhere to the guidelines of the Fourth Geneva Convention. Canada, as well as Israel, is a signatory of the Forth Geneva Convention and we, therefore, call upon the Canadian Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade to pressure Israel to adhere to this international document. Furthermore, we call on the Minister to guarantee that Israel also adhere to the UN Convention Against Torture, and Other Cruel, Inhuman, or Degrading Treatment or Punishment and the UN Rules for the Protection of Juveniles Deprived of their Liberty. Both Canada and Israel are signatories to these international conventions. In particular, we demand that our Foreign Affairs Minister call upon Israel to stop solitary confinement, to serve healthy food, to stop torturing prisoners, to provide educational facilities, to end collective punishment, and to stop moving prisoners to detention facilities far away from their homes. Furthermore, we call upon the Minister to demand the immediate release of the over 300 Palestinian children currently being detained by Israel. We also ask the Minister to ensure that Israel gives all Palestinian detainees a civil and fair trial, which includes legal representation and the disclosure of all evidence being used against the accused. Finally, in order to guarantee these demands are carried out, we ask the Minister to ensure that Israel allow international organizations and NGOs full and proper access to its detention and prison facilities.
