Australian Television Protest sign now

Hello Australian Television Network,

It's your viewing public here, and we thought we'd drop you a line and let you know that you've really been bugging us lately. We've complained in magazines and newspapers but you just keep ignoring us, and we don't like that. You see we know that you care more about your advertising sponsors than you do about us, but the bottom line is, without our eyeballs and our eardrums you wouldn't have any advertising sponsors. So we think it's about time you were nicer to our eyeballs and eardrums.

Here's some ideas for how you can show us the love and respect we deserve:

1. Stop yanking our chains with your running times.
Your shows need to start and finish on time, not 10 minutes early or 10 minutes late. Deliberately making us miss either the end or the beginning of our favourite shows is not only inconsiderate, but it's also incredibly rude.

2. You don't need to send us flowers and chocolates, just make a commitment and then stick to it like glue.
That's right; show the entire season at the same time on the same night each week. God, it sounds hard doesn't it? But you used to do it, and we're positive you can do it again, because we're telling you, constantly moving our shows around, usually as a prelude to dumping them completely, makes us feel really crappy. You wouldn't like your girlfriend or boyfriend to do that to you, would you? We want a stable relationship with the television networks we spend so much time with.

3. Be nice to the people who make your programs as well as the people who want to know who they are.
You may not believe this but there are some of us out there who like to read the credits or listen to the final theme song. Your habit of splitting the screen credits to postage stamp size so you can force your next show down our throats, is not only incredibly annoying but it's also incredibly disrespectful to the people who work on these shows. The artistic creativity of a television show or movie is not only in its actors, it includes writers, costumers, make-up artists, camera operators and directors, just to name a few. Give them some acknowledgement for God's sake. They need it.

4. We are not as dumb as you seem to think we are.
You don't really need to put little advertising blocks or promos for shows on the bottom of the screen during our favourite shows. You've already told us 200 times in the ad breaks what you are going to be showing us next, or the latest fad show that's coming along. We do actually have memories.

5. Don't be so lazy with your editing for advertising breaks.
We do understand that you have to have advertising, we really do. But cutting to ad breaks in the middle of a line delivery is really bad form.

That's it really, and we don't think we are being too demanding when you consider that the items listed above have only really appeared in the last couple of years, and as a compromise, we are prepared to live with the watermarks.

Please, take the time to consider our feelings, and lets return to a more mutually satisfying relationship.

Thank you.
