Arizona Iranians for Peace sign now

As proud Americans of Iranian descent, we are deeply concerned with the current rise in tensions between the US and Iran.

While for the past two decades Iranians have been a vibrant part of the Arizona community, we have not been vocal on international issues. It is now incumbent upon us to provide our unique insights on this topic in an effort to ease the tensions existing between our adopted homeland and the land of our heritage.

We urge you to join the growing number of your colleagues and the vast majority of the American people in calling for a sincere diplomatic effort to resolve the nuclear standoff.

We strongly believe that in order to make progress with Iran:

1) The U.S. must pursue dialoguewithout preconditionsregarding Irans uranium enrichment.

The Bush administrations precondition stipulating that Iran suspend its uranium enrichment before any negotiations proceed has been shown to be a nonstarter. Not only will Iran refuse to give up its rights under the NPT at the outset, but increased pressure from the U.S. to do so has been met with more rapid enrichment.

2) Congress must fulfill its constitutionally entrusted duty to prevent the president from provoking war with Iran.

Military strikes against Iran would further harm American interests in the region. Iranian cooperation is essential in stabilizing both Iraq and Afghanistan, and Iranian retaliation in these countries would render our efforts to bring peace to the region virtually impossible.

It is important to remember that what makes Iran so unique in the Middle East is the overwhelming favorable opinion of its population regarding Americans. This will all disappear overnight in the event of an American attack. Defense from outside attack is the only cause that will unite most Iranians with the Islamic regime!

Calling for peaceful solutions does not make us supporters of the Islamic regime, however. On the contrary, we are confident that opening dialogue will allow homegrown democratic forces to flourish. When the Bush administration openly espouses its goal of regime change in Iran, and covert U.S. military forces operate inside that countrycoupled with Congressional support for dissident Iranian groupsany effort for successful negotiations is greatly undermined. These actions also result in regime crackdowns on Iranian NGOs and other legitimate democratic forces and increase popular anger aimed at the American government.

Therefore, it is imperative that you support legislation such as House Joint Resolution 14, which will return war declaration authority to the rightful hands of the legislative branch and prevent a preemptive attack on the people of Iran.

Please also support H.Con.Res.177, which expresses the sense of Congress that the crisis regarding the Iranian nuclear program should be primarily resolved through diplomatic means.

We have faith in our elected leaders wisdom to see behind the fiery rhetoric and be brave enough to give diplomacy a chance. We owe it to both the American and Iranian people.
