APPEAL TO REVIEW THE TENURE CASE OF PROFESSOR JAMES SHERLEY

On January 3, 2005, Prof. James Sherley was informed that his tenure package will not proceed to the Engineering Council for review, which is the next step in the tenure process. As a result, Prof. Sherley will not be able to gain tenure in Biological Engineering at MIT.

James has played a significant role as an invaluable member of the Biological Engineering (BE) Division, since his appointment in 1998.

As a faculty member, he has stood out as a significant member of the BE community, because of his:

Energetic and approachable personality

Engaging participation during student and departmental seminars

Involvement in student activities

Enthusiasm for teaching

Support as a mentor to numerous undergraduate and graduate students

Creativity and respect as a scientist and role model to students.

Prof. Sherleys departure will be a great loss to the students and members of the BE community and MIT altogether.

By signing this petition, we the undersigned, ask that Prof. Sherleys tenure case be reviewed by the Engineering Council with all speed.

On January 26, 2005, this petition will be shown to President Susan Hockfield, Dr. Charles M. Vest (Former MIT President), Provost Robert A. Brown and Dean Thomas L. Magnanti.

I have been following Dr. Sherley's academic career for a long period. I am surprized and outraged by the desicion not to grant Dr. Sherley tenure at MIT. He is a reputable scientist with a highly-innovative research program. He must be granted tenure.

The response of the Institute to serious charges has been egregiously dismissive. There should be a thorough review.
