An Open Letter to Vladimir Romanov sign now

Dear Mr Romanov,

As a life-long supporter of Heart of Midlothian football Club, I feel I must voice my concerns about the way that the club is now being managed, not in a financial way (as unfortunately the supporters are now kept in the dark about this side of the club) but in a football way.

Firstly, let me start off by thanking you for rescuing Hearts from a chain of events which could have led to the demise of our great club and for delivering some hope and the Scottish Cup for long suffering supporters like myself. I am also very happy to see that you are signing up some of our best young talent and some exciting young players from across the world on long term deals and I see that this could be a very successful football and business strategy.

When you first came to the club I like a lot of my fellow supporters believed for that Hearts were about to rise to a level not seen since the fifties. Your initial appointments of George Burley and Phil Anderton were a master stroke. The changes that they and you made in a very short time were breath taking. Unfortunately we now appear to be on a downhill spiral which started with the sacking of George Burley and is continuing to this day. If something is not done quickly then rather than greatness in the future for Hearts all I can see is fan unrest, player unrest and business failure. As a loyal customer and with this in mind I would respectfully ask that you consider the following points.

1. I was greatly concerned to hear that for the first time you actually admitted (or at least failed to deny) that you had undue influence in team selection, tactics and training. These are highly specialised areas which are best left to those with an in-depth knowledge of football and the intricacies of the game. Please appoint someone to the position of Head Coach who has these skill sets and allow them to do their job. By all means question them, ask them any questions that you feel are appropriate but let them manage the team without your constant interference. If after a period of time (ideally longer than the ten to twenty games that most managers at Hearts now seem to get) they are not performing to the required levels then replace them. However, I would respectfully suggest that sacking a manager who has taken you to the top of the league and is on an unbeaten run is probably counter productive.

2. In football as with every job there are a maximum number of people that are required to do it successfully. Our squad is now so large that we have the equivalent of one person digging and three people watching him. Unfortunately, because of the interference referred to in point 1 it isnt even always the best person who has the shovel. I would respectfully ask that you stop filling our current first team squad with average players and then coercing our manager to play them.

3. You obviously have a sense of humour and a strong personality but the way in which you interact with the media in Scotland and the UK is damaging the reputation of the club. I have no knowledge of the press in Eastern Europe but I do know that the UK press will always stoop to the lowest possible levels to turn a story their way and I believe that rather that getting down and dirty with them that you should rise above it and keep the good name of our club out of their dirt. I would respectfully ask that you take the advise of your Scottish advisors when considering responses to the press.

4. In your short tenure as owner of Hearts you or people associated with Hearts have promised or have been quoted as promising CL winning team, World Cup Stars, 40,000 seater stadiums, big sponsors, big name managers, breath-taking football and on the whole these things have failed to materialise. Again I would respectfully suggest that it is far better to under promise and over deliver than the other way around. By all means have these lofty aspirations but to trumpet them from the roof tops only gets everyones hopes up and build a sense of frustration and disappointment among your customers when you fail to deliver.

5. To be successful in a business such as football you must attract successful and high profile partners. I cannot see how failing to pay for players or settling severance claims with previous employees can help us in this way. Please clear up these messes so that they are no long hanging over the club. I for one would be happy to forgo any new players coming in to the club if it meant that we paid for the ones we currently have.

6. The employees are the greatest asset of any business and this is especially so in an industry like football where the skill of the employees has a direct and profound impact on the customer. I have very little knowledge of Eastern European Employment relations and I feel that you have a similar lack of knowledge in how to deal with employees in Western Europe. From what I can see you employ an adversarial approach to dealing with employees which has had a direct impact on the playing performance and on the success of the business. I would respectfully suggest that direct dealings with the players on any matter other than football should be dealt with by Campbell Ogilvie who clearly has a greater knowledge of these things than you appear to.

7. My greatest concern and I am sure that it is the greatest concern of most fans is the long term survival of Heart of Midlothian Football Club. You as the current owner and we as supporters only hold the club in trust for future generations and I currently wonder how well we are doing this. At this time it appears that the fans are doing their part by turning out in record numbers, by buying record numbers of strips and supporting the companies many other money making schemes. I am concerned Mr Romanov, if however you are doing your part and I wonder at times how much of your financial input is genuine and how much is smoke and mirrors. Every one of your loyal customers are wondering what has happened to the debt? Where is the extra money coming from to bring in Players and pay the wage bill? Who will finance the new stadium and how will this be done? What is the plan for the long term financial future of Hearts? Why do the majority of our signings seem to be loan deals through Kanuas and what will happen to any profit that is made by selling on these players? I am well aware that some of the answers to these questions may be business sensitive. I would respectfully ask Mr. Romanov that you give the fans a clear idea of where you see the company going in the future, what your plan is to turn us into a sustainable profit making business and how you plan to deal with the current and future debt? Without clear and unambiguous answers to these questions I know that I for one will continue to doubt your intentions towards our football club and its long term future.

For the record I am not anti-Romanov or pro-Romanov I am Pro-Hearts and as such I wish you all success if your aim is to make Heart of Midlothian Football Club a world class football team and business. I hope that you see this letter or that some of your employees who do read this board bring it to your attention. I like every other Hearts fan want to Believe but your actions to date only lead me to believe that if you continue on the path you have chosen that the club will end up a shadow of what it could ultimately become.

Mr. Romanov please stop and consider your next move carefully. I honestly believe that you have started something with Hearts which could be huge but you current are actions could end up derailing it and turning the fans (your customers) against you.

Sincerely
