AMU's Minority Character sign now

Dr Manmohan Singh
Prime Minister of India
Prime Ministers House
New Delhi
INDIA

Dear Mr Prime Minister,

The judgement of the Divisional Bench of Allahabad High Court, invoking the absurd logic of the infamous Aziz Basha case and quashing the Amendment Act 1981, will be seen around the world and will be noted in history as nothing but the perpetuation of the old practice of denial of justice to the Indian Muslims.

Mr Prime Minister, we hardly need to remind you that the process of this injustice, done in three different phases, was started in 1951 barely four years after India became independent, when a secular liberal leader like Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru was at the helm of affairs of the country and an Education Minister happened to be an eminent Muslim personality like Maulana Abul Kalam Azad. When this injustice reached its climax in 1965 another Muslim, Muhammad Ali Chagla was the Education Minister. Ironically again, Allahabad High Courts decision has also come at a time when a Muslim happens to be the President of the largest democracy of the world.

Mr Prime Minister, most shameful injustices in human history have been done in the name of justice and through courts. This attempted cultural and educational strangulation of Indian Muslims, initiated by the Parliament in 1951 and completed by the Supreme Court in 1968, by refusing to accept that the Aligarh Muslim University was established by the Muslims, is one of these historic travesties with justice.

We appreciate the fact that AMU Amendment Bill 1981 partially restored the AMUs Minority Character, was the result of our Governments realisation of the need to redress the blatant denial of justice to Indian Muslims.

However, Allahbad High Courts Divisional Benchs judgement has once again shaken the confidence of the Muslim community and the problem will remain there for as long as the Parliament does not pass a bill admitting that injustice was done with the Muslim community.

Therefore, we the undersigned, urge you to pass, Rectification of Mistake & Recognition of Facts Bill" in the parliament and restore, fully, the Minority Character of AMU.

Mr Prime Minister AMU is an important part of Muslim heritage in India and is seen as a symbol of the freedom given to its minorities. If the despotic Acts of the Parliament in 1951 and 1965 are not undone by passing a Rectification of Bill and Indian Muslims are not given their due share, this will have an impact on Indias attempt to become a member of the OIC.
