All Labels Memo sign now

In a market that more and more move towards internet in the meaning of sales, it becomes more and more important to understand that buying music online in th eform of MP3s do not necessarily represent the greater evil for record companies or for bands. Though in order for the physical CD to survive in the future, side by side with MP3s and other digital files, it is indeed important to review the whole process of how CDs are priced, from label to distributor to consumer.

I strongly believe that people will still continue to buy physical albums in the future, especially if one keep the end price to a minimum. It all comes down to the price tag labels as well as distros, mailorders and shops put on the CDs.

As an artist myself, I must admit that I really do not appreciate or like it when I see my own albums being sold for 15 Euro or more, as they could with ease have been sold for 10 Euro, even with postage included, if some people hadnt been so damn greedy.

Maybe we need to go back in time, to the times when the punk movement printed a statement on their albums about NOT paying more than a certain amount for it.

With this said I would also like to say that there are good places around where one can buy CDs for a reasonable price, meaning you can buy physical CDs through mailorders on internet and it wouldnt cost you more than 12-14 US$ / 10 12 Euro for a CD with postage included and then sent worldwide.

This is something most people would consider to be a fair price, and would most likely also be a good reason for getting the physical CD rather than buying it off iTunes or similar legal downlod services.

With such a pricing when it comes to what the customer pays for a physical CD, the gap between buying a CD or purchasing the album as MP3s become far more narrow than it is now, and thus makes people rather want the physical CD with all its artwork etc, rather than only digital files.

If a record company, sell the CD for 6 Euro to a distributor, and that distributor then sell the album through their online shop for 15 Euro or more there is something wrong if you ask me, as there is no logic explanation to why a distributor should make more money than the label releasing the album. If there is I would like to know what the logic is.

With this I wish to start an appeal for changes in th emusic industry. I also want labels and distributors to join in and start promising that they will work together to establish a set maximum price a CD should have at the end of the chain. My suggestion is to work towards a goal of maximum 10 12 Euro with postage included worldwide, as I see this price to be competitive with sales of digital files.

After all it is better to sell 500 copies of a CD for 10 Euro than 200 for 20 Euro each.
