Against a new stadium for Liverpool Football Club sign now

FAO: Rick Parry, Liverpool FC

After having a few years to digest the idea of a new stadium for our great and beloved club, I have finally come to a decision regarding my stance on this matter.

I am wholeheartedly against a move to a new stadium, and fully support the redevelopment of Anfield in its present location.

No amount of money generated from extra seating to buy extra players will bring us success. This is not a stadium for the future. The future you talk about has already happened. Football is already saturated with money. We have, admittedly, stood still and are actually now seeing success with the tried and tested formula we have relied on in the past. A hard-working team, a gifted manager, the best supporters in the land, and the Liverbird charging us on to victory.

You say we need to increase our ground capacity to compete with the best. I disagree. We dont need profits and a bottomless pit to win the European Cup, we have proven that.

I am no student of the finances of the new stadium, and do not wish to be, because the economics of this matter do not interest me.

As a season ticket holder, I was naturally at Anfield the night we defeated Chelsea last year in the Semi-Final, as I am sure you were too. Such an atmosphere was unbelievable, and my hairs stand on end when I think about it. I am sure, as you are reading this, you are also getting that tingling feeling too. For me, it was a victory of passion and prestige against money and its control of the modern game. It was what LFC is all about. It was the spirit of the club that won us that game, not the linesman, not luck, not money. A good manager, a successful team and vociferous and passionate support is all this club is about. It needn't be any more than that and it doesn't need any more than that.

The moment when I decided we cannot possibly move from Anfield was not that night but when I came across an interview with John Terry in the Daily Mirror a couple of weeks after we won the European cup and he commented on how HIS hairs stood on end when he walked out that night and how he found the atmosphere terrifying.

I am 25 now , and not particularly religious in the conventional sense. I have however realised that throughout my future people I love and cherish will die, I may not always have my health, I may not always be able to feed myself, but one thing I will always have above everything else, that will always exist in my life to the very end, is what constitutes a religion in my life - LFC. I vehemently believe that moving away from our spiritual home will take a massive element of what makes LFC a religion for so many people away from them. What will be left is simply a football club with a lost identity. I believe that that extra special thing that gives us that extra edge will be gone.

Remember Rick, as a local lad once said 'Money can't buy me Love'. It cant buy the European Cup either.

This is my reason why we should not move away from Anfield and the undersigned may not share this view, however the fact that they have signed this petition means that they agree with the following statement

"I am wholeheartedly against a move to a new stadium, and fully support the redevelopment of Anfield in its present location."

Thank-you for your time.
