Affirming Scriptural Teaching on Marriage

The Episcopal Church is home to many congregations, clergy and laity that believe holy scripture and the unbroken tradition of the church teach that the marriage of one man to one woman is the sole context for sexual intimacy blessed and consecrated by God. We believe this.

We explicitly disavow any action or attitude of heart that attacks or defames those who consider themselves homosexual, bisexual, transgendered, polyamorous or otherwise.

Jesus died so that any who believe in him might be saved from their sins, and he commissioned us to seek them everywhere. The church thus must be radically inclusive in sharing the gospel with all people, but this does not mean that all sexual lifestyles are blessed or designed by God. To promote or approve of sexual activity outside of marriage is neither prophetic nor wise, no matter how agreeable it is to popular culture or the spirit of the age, and we cannot affirm it in any way.

We will continue to love all, teach all, care for all, and welcome all, but we must do it consistent with the manner set forth by God in scripture and in the unbroken tradition of the church. To do less is to repudiate the fellowship, faith and belief of the worldwide Christian church, and its Anglican Communion in particular. This we will not do.
