Petition to Address the Size of GH591W

We, the students of the Global Health Department at the Rollins School of Public Health, are deeply concerned that the GH 591W course, Monitoring and Evaluating International Public Health Programs, has been expanded to a size that is detrimental to the adequate learning environment of a graduate student in a Masters of Public Health Program.

It is our feeling that after three semesters of being enrolled in courses that have been far too large for a MPH program, the 2nd year students have been asked once again to accomodate the overly eager growth of the school by being required to be in a course that far exceeds the average GH student-to-faculty ratio of 6.54:1 with a ratio of 80:1. Many of the GH Community and Health Development Concentration students have never had a course with less than ten students.

There is currently no GH-CHD required course that has less than a 15:1 student-to-faculty ratio; in fact the majority of them have averaged 30-70 students.

Many of our required courses such as Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Policy and Strategy have all exceeded or surpassed 70+ students. By combining the 1st year GH-CHD students with the 2nd year GH-CHD students for this "transition year" both sets of students are being unfairly punished for the current rearrangement of GH requirements.

The GH administration must accept responsibility for their decision and create two distinct classes, one for 1st-year students and one for 2nd-year students. This would provide a more condusive learning environment and help alleviate much of the animosity that many GH-CHD students feel about their large class sizes.

The creation of discussion sections does not alleviate the issue of having four hours of lecture with 75+ students where conversation between the facutly member and the student will be kept to a minimum. Many graduate students want their classes to be interacted, they do not want to be lectured to with no student-student and student-facutly interaction. Graduate school should not be designed with courses of this size; they are to the detriment of learning and education of both the faculty and the students.

After three semesters of having these unacceptably large courses, concerned 2nd year GH-CHD students must be heard and we urge you to join our petition to have this issue re-examined by the GH administration.
