Addison Park on Clark Petition sign now

We, the registered voters of the 44th Ward oppose the development of an 8 story, 135 room Hyatt hotel and 137 unit apartment building along the south side of Addison and the east side of the 3500 block of Clark Street for the following reasons:

1. The plan asks for 8 stories, which nearly doubles the current zoning, and will destroy the character of Clark and Addison and beyond. Other property owners will also want 8 stories and will be motivated to tear down their 1 and 2 story buildings to build, (especially the surface lots at McDonalds, Taco Bell, and U-Haul). Our neighborhood is already too dense. Imagine Wrigley Field in the middle of North and Clybourn.

2. The developer/owner plans to evict many historic, vibrant and cherished businesses in our community, particularly the Improv Olympics, Goose Island, Salt and Pepper, Red Ivy, Bar Louie, and others and bring in big box stores like CVS, Dominicks, Starbucks, Nike, Best Buy and the like.

3. The development will drive up property taxes which will drive up commercial rents throughout the neighborhood. In this recession, we will see a domino effect which could force many more small and independent businesses around the area to close.

4. The plan calls for 135 hotel rooms, 137 apartment units, mostly studios and 1 bedrooms, and big box stores. This will produce a very transient community next to our established neighborhoods and significantly increase the terrible traffic, density, congestion and litter we already experience as residents in Wrigleyville.

5. The plan creates a boxy suburban feel and look to the neighborhood which destroys the historic and varied urban character and feel of our community. The aesthetics don't fit.

6. The plan overwhelms Wrigley Field which should stand out as a landmark over all surrounding structures.

For these reasons we respectfully ask you to oppose the Clark Addison development as proposed.
