Accessible Workforce for Recent Graduates NOW sign now

We, the undersigned, feel that the Canadian government, both on the provincial and federal levels, needs to take steps immediately to assist university graduates in entering the workforce on a broad scope, while opening the doors to further study that is affordable. This entails measures including but not limited to the following:

1. Creating programs that provide paid internships, thereby generating related work experience that can be listed upon oneвs resume, including programs provided within government offices and government-run organizations.
2. Offering incentives to organizations and companies that provide entry-level positions, in fields beyond the business and IT sector (e.g., Psychology, Sociology, Criminology) to students with a Bachelorвs level education.
3. Expanding funding to graduate schools, to ensure more qualified students are able to commence Doctorate studies each year, thus increasing our employable professionals (eg, Doctors, Lawyers, Psychiatrists, Psychologists, Social Workers).
4. Working with university graduates to avoid them being left in the cold in the job market while students pursuing shorter, college-based programs find employment faster.
5. Encouraging companies to accept recent graduates with probationary periods at a slightly reduced salary, in lieu of selecting only experienced candidates. One cannot gain experience without a position.

These measures would not only reduce poverty among recent graduates and youth, but would encourage students to pursue higher education to completion. Further, providing gainful employment to recent graduates of a reasonable rate of pay would allow more students to repay their student loan debt, thereby reducing the number of defaults, bankruptcy claims, and in turn, returning funds to the system to aid the students of the future. Further, these youth will free up minimum wage jobs for high school students, including those вat-riskв youth suddenly at the focus of government efforts due to recent gunplay in impoverished neighbourhoods. Last, it will reduce the student drain on already meager Food Bank resources, and reduce requests for social assistance.

No university graduate should hold a minimum wage job. This is unacceptable in a supposed First World Country. Please take action immediately, to ensure students have the bright future they were sold once upon a time, in their younger years.
