ACADEMIC COMPLAINT for office space provision in LIT sign now

This is a complaint about the current state of academic facilities provision by the School of Literature and Creative Writing of which we are postgraduate research students.

During the past few years what was then EAS and is now LIT had no provision of office space for postgraduate students and especially research students. The only provision of office space came in the form of a shared room in the Arts II building, Floor 2 (next to the EAS General Office) with two computers and two printers, which could be used free of charge by anyone in UEA since there was no supervision in the aforementioned room. It can not be doubted that as a research student it is impossible to work under those conditions, and all informal complaints were answered with the promise of a new office space that would be ready for this academic year.

With the beginning of this academic year a shared PGR Centre with facilities for all research students who have no other allocated office space in the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, DEV and ECO was opened in the Arts I building, Floor 01 and in the guidelines provided with the pin code to access this room the following is stated:

Enable the workroom to be used on a hot-desk basis. Please do not leave personal belongings on desks when you are absent, or leave possessions in the lockers for long periods (i.e. more than 24 hours)
Printing charges will be administered by the Library Reception, if you want to use the Laser printer you must credit your printing account

implying that not only we now have one printer shared between students from the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, DEV and ECO (instead of two printers shared between students from EAS only) but that we have to pay for our own printing although previously it was completely free.

It has to be made clear that it is impossible for any postgraduate research student to effectively work under on a hot-desk basis conditions. For example, since we are allowed to take at least 20 books out from the library at any given time we should have sufficient space to store them (as well as the rest of our research materials) and not merely a 1-coin-operated smallish locker which should be emptied at the end of each day, as it is only allocated to any student for a 24-hour period. As many students have remarked, it is impossible to work in a workstation where you need to pack up your books and go every evening and bring them from home every morning. This research postgraduate student centre is useful for only one very specific reason: brief e-mail correspondence, which is what it has been mostly used for by students since its opening.

All postgraduate research students have been guaranteed to be provided with adequate academic services and facilities by the University of East Anglia and the shared on a hot-desk basis room in Floor 01 does not satisfy these conditions. Therefore I urge you to take immediate action for this problem to be resolved quickly and effectively, especially as some of us are at the final stages of our research, which are particularly vital to our success and academic future.
