A UNION STANDS TOGETHER sign now

As moviegoers and members of the general public, we find it unconscionable that at a time when Hollywood stars can make $25-30 million per film, Producers have launched a cost-cutting offensive against union workers who are simply trying to pay their mortgages and raise their children.

At the heart of the Producers' offensive is a strategy of "Divide and Conquer." In selectively seeking the elimination of just one position, the Camera Operator (one of only a handful of mandatory staffing requirements in the entire Hollywood Basic Agreement), the Producers have given union film workers the sense that, overall, this year's contract negotiations were a great success for labor.

Don't be fooled!

At the next negotiation, having eliminated Camera Operators and forced Directors of Photography to do both jobs, the Producers will selectively target another union local for concessions. Three years later, another local will be targeted. Then another and another and so on, until the union - whose members were convinced all the while that bad things only happen to other people - will have voted itself into extinction.

This must not happen.

Therefore, we, the undersigned, stand with the film industry's camera workers and urge all I.A.T.S.E. locals to look beyond the next three years and vote to REJECT this year's contract. The precedent it sets will have huge ramifications in every future contract negotiation. Why not set a precedent that helps your cause, rather than one that destroys it? Show the Producers that the single most important precedent this year's negotiation will set is this:

A UNION STANDS TOGETHER.
