A request to make manufacturers list every tenth of a gram of trans-fats on their labels! sign now

To the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA),

We the undersigned request that you modify your current and upcoming laws that require manufacturers to list trans-fats on the labels of their foods. Currently there is no requirement in place. In the year 2006, manufacturers will be required to list trans-fats on their labels, however they will be allowed to legally list 0 if the amount in a food is below .5. As dangerous as trans-fats are for our society, and as unaware as much of the public is about dangerous trans-fats, we feel this labeling process is misleading and manufacturers will continue to circumvent the new law in any way they can to be able to boast 0 grams of trans-fats on their labels. Whether that means changing the serving size so that there is technically less than .5 grams of trans-fats per serving, or some other means, we feel that this is misleading at best, and dangerous to the health of every citizen in the United States of America. We feel strongly that every tenth of a gram of trans-fats that is in a food should be accounted for, and should have to be posted clearly on the label.
Eating just the smallest amounts of trans-fats on a daily basis can lead to detrimental diseases down the road, and by allowing manufacturers to list 0 if it's below .5 is not only misleading those who are less aware of what to look for, but it's unethical. We feel that if there are even .1 grams of trans-fats in a food product, consumers should have the right to know. With something as dangerous as trans-fats, in even the smallest of quantities, manufacturers should be required to adhere strictly to accounting for every tenth of a gram, if they choose not to remove these deadly substances from their products altogether.
We respectfully request that you reconsider your decision to allow manufacturers to list 0 grams if it's under .5, and ask that you do what's right for the health of the public, not the manufacturers. This is too important to ignore.

Thank you.
