A PETITION TO SAVE PRINCE OF WALES PUBLIC SCHOOL BARRIE, ONTARIO sign now

WHEREAS the future of Prince of Wales Public School is in jeopardy as this 128 year old school in downtown Barrie has been labeled "Prohibitive to Repair" using measures that do not adequately reflect the actual repair needs of the school facility, the value of the facility, and its place in the urban centre of Barrie, Ontario; and

WHEREAS Mr. Gerard Kennedy, our Minister of Education, has stated publicly that "Previous generations made sure our schools were points of pride for students and staff and it's time for our generation to do the same"; and

WHEREAS the Ministry of Education in its "Good Places to Learn" initiative has stated that new school closure guidelines will require boards to develop their own school valuation tool that weighs each of four sets of considerations about the school:

Its value to the student
Its value to the community
Its value to the school system
Its value to the local economy; and

WHEREAS there is universal support for Prince of Wales Public School amongst its staff, parent and student body, and the community at large; and

WHEREAS Prince of Wales Public School in Barrie is the oldest continuously operating school in Simcoe County; and

WHEREAS Prince of Wales Public School has been providing the community with quality education for more than 128 years; and

WHEREAS the impact of the closure of Prince of Wales would be devastating on the whole of the downtown core and most especially the urban neighbourhood which the school serves;

BE IT RESOLVED that we demand that the Dalton McGuinty government and our Minister of Education, Mr. Gerard Kennedy, live up to their commitments and ensure that community schools are not forced to close. We demand that the Minister of Education immediately step in to compel the Simcoe County District School Board to listen to the Barrie community, the students, teachers, and parents of the school, and use funding that has come forward under School Renewal Grants to repair and renovate Prince of Wales and halt the closure of Prince of Wales Public School.
