A Message to Congress to End Credit History Employment Discrimination sign now

Dear members of Congress,

Consider for a moment one of the biggest "Catch 22's" in society today: being denied an opportunity to make more money because you have money problems.

For millions of Americans in the current economy, loss of a job or medical problems/decreased work has resulted in the inability to pay bills on time or at all. So, when these people go to find a good job, one that actually presents an opportunity to escape government assistance and build economic security, they are turned down because of their bad luck. It is basically saying, "Thank you for applying and interviewing for this position. We appreciate the fact that you would like to earn real money with a good company, but because you need the money so bad, as evidenced by your credit history, we cannot hire you. Go make minimum wage somewhere they do not care about credit, and continue struggling and depending on food stamps and medicaid for you and your family."

The typical rationale for this discrimination is that someone who has credit problems presents a risk of fraud and/or theft, and they should not be employed. Not only is that assigning guilt before an alleged crime is even committed, but it's not true. In fact, people with more need typically work harder so that they can keep their jobs, and to be good, productive workers so that they will be promoted and earn more money.

We are telling Congress that this type of discrimination is morally and ethically wrong, and it is also contributing to the increasingly bad economy by placing citizens into situations in which they are unable to make ends meet without relying on other tax payers' money.

The voters who are signing this petition believe that credit history discrimination needs to stop now! Help hard working Americans earn the dignity, respect, and wages they deserve!
