A Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire for both the actor/comedian/writer Ronnie Barker and the actor/comedian Ronnie Corbett. sign now

We the undersigned request that both the television comedy actor/comedian/writer Ronnie Barker and the television comedy actor/comedian Ronnie Corbett are made Knight Commanders of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire.

Ronnie Barker was born on 25th September 1929 and Ronnie Corbett was born on 4th December 1930. The Two Ronnies are probably second best to Morecambe and Wise in terms of best double act on television, although they are not really a double act, they are just paired together, but are still classed as second best behind Morecambe and Wise. The Two Ronnies have given the public so much to laugh about over the years and I am very sorry to here of the death of Ronnie Barker. Who could forget the sketch called Fork Handles, as this was their best sketch of all time and it is everybodies favourite at the end of the day. There aren't many people in comedy that can make virtually the entire nation laugh, but Ronnie Barker did just that. Besides starring together in The Two Ronnies, both Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett were successful by themselves. Ronnie Corbett starred in the BBC sitcom Sorry, which ran for seven series from (1981-1988), playing the grown up son Timothy Lumsden, who still lived with his domineering mother. Ronnie Barker also starred in numerous sitcoms as well and created some wonderful characters over the years. It didn't matter whether he was Norman Stanley Fletcher in Porridge (1973-1977), Arkwright in Open All Hours (1973-1985) or Clarence Sale in Clarence (1988), he was absolutely brilliant everytime. When Ronnie Barker retired from the BBC in 1987 to run an antiques shop in Chipping Norton (Oxfordshire), comedy suddenly went downhill and it has never been right ever since. Today's sitcoms are appalling and nobody can match the genius that was Ronnie Barker. In recent years, Ronnie Barker has made the occasional appearance on television. He starred alongside Albert Finney in The Gathering Storm in 2002, playing Winston Churchill's butler and in 2003 starred alongside Dame Maggie Smith in My House in Umbria. In 2004 he was given a special Bafta award and in 2005 announced he was coming back on television with Ronnie Corbett to present The Two Ronnies Sketchbook. He presented The Two Ronnies Sketchbook just before he died. Ronnie Barker made every role his own and all three of his sitcoms were classics. Some people regard Ronnie Barker as the King of comedy, but I disagree with that. Ronnie Barker was the Emperor of comedy.

Both Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett have already received OBE's, but we feel it is time to make them both Sir's. It is an absolute disgrace that they haven't been Knighted yet and it would have been a nice gesture if Ronnie Barker had received his Knighthood whilst he was still alive. When it comes to Ronnie Corbett receiving his Knighthood, he should collect Ronnie Barker's on his behalf, so it is down on paper that Ronnie Barker has been Knighted.
