3c04 Complexity sign now

This petition calls for the 3C04 Complexity module grades to be increased more than usual, due to the material in the exam paper.

Section B of the exam was seen as being fair overall; however the general consensus is that the previous years question was easier. Comparatively to Section A, it was considered to be a fair reflection of ability.

Section A posed a question that only the top of the class could understand. The last part of the question was not understood by most, based on the level of teaching received, and with around 20 marks allocated to it, it formed a large part of the paper.

The main problem was that the question did not differentiate candidates in each grade sector. Instead, the marks were given to only those who understood the question fully, so one was likely to either gain around 0 marks, or around 20 marks. A good question should reflect upon the person's grades within these mark boundaries. In this case, a student who had put in a lot of effort will be rewarded as much as those who have put in no work, which is unacceptable.

Regardless of this, even the first parts of the question were significantly harder than previous years.

As it is the final year for the vast majority of us, this one exam was very important. Many of us have job offers or further education offers based on the results of our degree. We do not want to miss out on our final grade due to an unfair question.

Thus, this petition calls for the grade boundaries to be lowered more than usual, so that this years results may reflect the average of previous years.
